GOP Slates Candidates

The Marion County GOP got together at Ben Davis High School on Saturday and had a good, ole' fashioned slating convention. The following candidates were slated.

Of course, as with any slating convention, there were a few interesting choices.

A source of mine tells me that behind-the-scenes there was some maneuvering. Incumbent Judges Bill Young and S.K. Reid knew they would not be slated. There were other strong candidates that were told that they would not be slated as well and not to bother with a run.

Two of the House slating choices got my attention. Scott Keller, a very moderate Republican, was slated in District 100. As you may remember, he received a ton of blowback from his party for his vote on the Human Rights Ordinance when he was on the City-County Council. He provided the 15th vote back then for that to pass as Democrat Sherron Franklin had joined the Republicans. In that district and in an open seat situation (John Day is retiring), Keller could be a formidable foe. Dems shouldn't be so concerned about him, though. He's extremely reasonable and intelligent.

Tim Motsinger, a friend of the blog, and one of the few political figures that immediately did the right thing when the whole Tim Durham thing blew up, was slated for Phil Hinkle's soon-to-be old House seat. The IMPD officer and former Sheriff's deputy returned Durham's $200K plus contribution immediately and dropped out of the race for Marion County Sheriff.

Perennial candidates Jim Joven and A.J. Feeney-Ruiz were also slated.

Democrats will get together on February 11 at the Indiana Convention Center.

RNC Expoits Costa Concordia Disaster for Political Gain

While the search continues for the bodies of 15 missing people in the Costa Concordia disaster, RNC Chair Reince Priebus thought it would be a good idea to exploit the disaster for political gain on Face the Nation this morning.

Priebus was making a point about how his party will unite behind its nominee when he dropped this zinger, "In a few months, this is all going to be ancient history and we're going to be talking about our own little Captain Schettino, which is President Obama who's abandoning ship here in the United States and is more interested in campaigning than doing his job as President."

WHAT?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!??!?

With apologies to Bill Tobin, Who the HELL is Reince Priebus? What outhouse did he crawl in from? Oh! Apparently the Wisconsin Republican Party. The same party that gave us Scott Walker. Now, it all makes sense.

Every President is afforded the opportunity to campaign for his own reelection bid. Should the President abandon the campaign trail and lock himself in the Oval Office until November? No. That would be essentially throwing the game.

President Obama is doing what every sitting President that has run for reelection in the electronic media era has done before him. He's doing his job as President while campaigning for office. It's absolutely ridiculous to assert otherwise. When President Obama gets done with a campaign event, he gets on Air Force One or Marine One or into a limo where the entire head end of the government is at his disposal. The Office of the President is and has been ready to react in a Post-9/11 world in an immediate fashion. That's all beside the point. The President isn't abandoning ship like Capt. Francesco Schettino apparently did.

Schettino is being roundly portrayed in the media as a coward for his alleged actions following the Costa Concordia disaster. Is that really what Prebius is trying to say? Is he trying to brand Obama as a coward? If so, why does he hide behind some metaphor? Why doesn't he just come out and say it? Show some intestinal fortitude, sir.

I also think it's unseemly for the chair of a major political party to invoke a comparison with the Costa Concordia disaster and a presidential campaign. After all, 17 people are confirmed dead and another 15 are still missing in the hulk of that ship.

It was a stupid comparison, and I think the RNC should apologize for the Chair's comments. They made no sense and were disrespectful to the families that await word of loved ones in the Costa Concordia disaster. That shipwreck has nothing to do with the 2012 Presidential Election.

And who the hell is Reince Priebus?

NOT POLITICAL: Olympic Diver Thomas Finchum Can SANG!

If you've followed Olympic sports over the past 10 years or so, you've probably heard of Thomas Finchum.

Thomas has been a force on the Olympic diving scene ever since he was a young boy. Well, he's still diving, and he's also singing in his spare time trying to get a music career going with his band, Northern Lights.

I've never actually met Thomas, but I've been following him on Facebook. Today, he posted this unbelievable cover of Adele's Someone Like You. Enjoy.

Old Hinkle Plot to Remove At-Large Seats Re-hatched in Senate

Phil Hinkle took a lot of heat last year.

One of the most controversial things he did IN the Statehouse was to file an amendment to a bill that would have eliminated the four At-Large seats on the City-County Council in 2016. After some talk, the amendment he pushed was eventually dropped last session.

Now, an out-of-town lawmaker, Sue Landske, a Republican Senator from Cedar Lake, has filed an amendment on the Senate side to SB 110 to do what Hinkle wanted to do last year again this year.

Of course, the four At-Large seats were a Unigov creation that for many years assured a Republican majority on the City-County Council. Since the late 1990's, as Marion County and Indianapolis have become more blue, the Council At-Large seats have followed that trend. After losing two of the four seats and the Democrats picking up another one, suddenly the Republicans want to erase those At-Large seats with D's in all four seats now.

The idea of At-Large seats makes some sense. You have your district level Councillors that must be attuned to the needs of the specific district, but I think it's good to have four Councillors whose constituents are the entire county. They should have a more global view of what's good and bad for the city, as a whole.

When Republicans held two of the At-Large seats, I thought it was a bad idea to get rid of the At-Larges. Now that Democrats hold all four again, I still think Landske's amendment is a bad idea. I also find it annoying that some lawmaker from Cedar Lake believes it's her place to fiddlefart around with Marion County government. There's no pressing need to change the makeup of our City-County Council.

If the four At-Large seats didn't exist, the Council would have a 13-12 Republican majority and after GOP operative David Brooks redistricted the Council with little public and no Democratic Party input, this move shows that the fix must be in for sure. She was put up to this, no question. I'm just surprised it wasn't Mike Young or Scott Schneider or someone that filed the amendment.

Guess they didn't have the guts.

Republicans Really Jamming RTW Through Now

The Indiana House is done with Right to Work. That means that the fight returns to the Indiana Senate in a rush to get this thing done before the Super Bowl.

Republicans are done listening to any dissent. They want this bill on the Governor's desk by Feb. 1, according to multiple news reports. The reason? To make things nice and tidy when visitors get here for the Super Bowl on Thursday. Even the Republicans are admitting it!

Only four more Republican Senators are needed to flip the script here. Hopefully, those individuals can be found and can be persuaded to change their votes from the 28-22 vote the first time through the Indiana Senate.

As time goes on, the Republicans are becoming more and more power drunk and are becoming less and less accountable to the constituents that put them in office. The wedge issues continue. From creationism to gay marriage, you can bet that Republicans will try to tackle it.

Elections most definitely do have consequences. Unfortunately, Indiana is getting a rather one-sided look at what Republicans do when they hold all the cards.

Auctioneer Bids For Creationism in Schools

Dennis Kruse (R-Auburn) is an auctioneer by trade, and he was a teacher for five years about 40 years ago.

He's also a longtime Indiana legislator first elected to the Indiana House in 1988. In 2004, he moved from the House to the Senate. So, all totaled up, he's spent over 20 years in the Indiana General Assembly.

It's clear from his resume that Kruse has spent a lot of time on education in his time in the General Assembly. He's the Senate Education Chair.

Kruse is the sponsor of Senate Bill 89. This bill would allow Indiana school boards to require the teaching of creationism or "creation science" in Indiana classrooms right along with the accepted and evidence-supported theories on the origins of life.

Let's get one thing out of the way, none of us were there when life began. We don't know how it did, but I would bet that God did not create the world and everything on it in seven days about 10,000 years ago. Science does not support that theory. Thus, it's just a story. It's a hypothesis with no evidence. In fact, fossils would say that is just simply not true.

I am more apt to believe the theory of intelligent design over the story of creation. Intelligent design is not provable, but it is the idea that an intelligent entity guided evolution or somehow delivered on a plan to create the universe and everything in it. It's not really provable, but it seems more believable than "creation science" or anything related to it. Then again, religious-based theory has no place in science.

If I were a science educator, I would be embarrassed to teach creationism along science in my public school classroom. If I were a parent, and I wanted my child to receive a religious-based education, I would take the necessary steps and move my child to a school that will teach the curriculum I agree with.

There's no way this bill will ever pass Constitutional muster. NO WAY.

Finally, what's most scary is that a professional auctioneer (who was a teacher from 1970-1975) thinks that he knows best about what should be taught in an Indiana science classroom in 2012. This is why we need educators to wake up and educate our legislators. Speak in one clear voice that these kinds of religious stories have no place in our public school classrooms.

Thankfully, SB 89 is getting a lot of push back. Let's hope that continues.

RTW Nearly Done Deal

Speaker Brian Bosma got his Right to Work bill by a margin of 54-44 in the Indiana House. While Bosma got what he wanted, Indiana workers got the shaft. It's fitting that the weather is terrible outside tonight. This "job creation" bill is a step back for working Hoosiers.

Don't let anyone tell you that it isn't.

Indiana will become only the 23rd state to adopt RTW if the Senate and the House now pass each other's identical bills.

A change in the vote of four Senators or five Representatives could derail Speaker Bosma's plans to stick it to Hoosier working families.

Home Should Be Off Limits

Unless you want Brian Bosma and Right to Work supporters to come to your house and protest outside your home, you should stay away from his home.

Right to Work opponents decided to protest inside Speaker Bosma's neighborhood and outside his home. I'm not talking one or two...like 30 or 40 people. This is not the way to A) win friends or B) get him to respect your point of view; it's just a way to annoy people.

Maybe that's ok with you, but it's not ok with me. Protest loudly at the Statehouse...even in front of the Governor's Mansion. That's a state building (although you probably won't find Mitch Daniels there). Don't go into a private neighborhood and occupy it. That's not cool.

In Memoriam: Judge Bill Fisher

Decatur Township Small Claims Court Judge Bill Fisher has passed away...far far too young. There is no word yet on arrangements.

The Republican was elected in 2006 to his first term and was reelected in the Midterm Election in 2010.

I send my deepest condolences to Judge Fisher's family and friends. In my dealings with the Judge, he was always cordial to me despite our political differences.

Someone Somewhere Has Great Sense of Humor; GOP Debate Thoughts

It appears that someone at NBC or someone that submits the program descriptions to Xfinity/Comcast made an error for the 9-10:00 p.m. time slot last night...or did they?

Yep. That pretty much covers it.

On the topic of the debate, I thought it was the strongest debate. We saw some clear delineations between the candidates. If I were scoring it, I would put Ron Paul as the winner.

Paul continually separates himself from the field as the one true outsider voice on the stage. It doesn't mean that I agree with him on some of his more interesting public policy positions, but I found his answers as to how to handle delicate situations with Cuba and Iran both refreshing and spot on. Ron Paul may be 76 years old, but his thinking on issues like that is most definitely 21st Century and not a relic of the Cold War.

Rick Santorum may open his mouth and say crazy things, but he looked the part of a President tonight. His closing comments were a pointed appeal to the hard core conservatives. It might be enough to keep his campaign alive for now.

As far as Romney, I thought he connected a few big punches on Gingrich. He was much more engaged and seemed more agile on his feet. He still comes across as cold and really does not connect well. His coining of the phrase "self deport" might be a pop culture moment.

Then, there's Newt. Many people noticed how Gingrich seemed less the debate master (I won't use the same term that my friend Matt Stone did) than in the past without a cheering and encouraging crowd. I thought he looked bored most of the night and seemed to be thinking that he's running for President in about 1980.

Well, that's it for now. The State of the Union is tonight. It's Barack Obama's turn.

Right To Work Passes Indiana Senate, 28-22

With nine Republicans joining the 13 Democrats in opposition, Right to Work passed the Indiana Senate, 28-22. The fight now moves to the Indiana House where 11 of the 100 Republicans will be needed to join the Dems to defeat the bill.

This may sound like a daunting task, but I think that nine Republican Senators joining the Democrats is fairly remarkable. The nine Senators who crossed the invisible line include:

Interestingly, money has been spent against Mary Ann Sullivan, who is running for Brent Waltz's Senate seat, for her opposition on Right to Work. The horrible and misleading ads are paid for by a mysterious group that is backing RTW. Well, kind of looks like the money is down the drain now. The guy whose seat they are trying to preserve is an RTW opponent. Personally, I think Waltz feels the heat.

The fight now goes to the House. If 11 Republicans cross the line like their Senate colleagues did, that means this battle is over. After that, it's back to the Senate where the fight continues for four more votes.

There's life in the opposition. Message sent!

Fox 59 (who erroneously reports the nature of the bill itself...yet again) says the Democrats have walked out of the House in protest.

What's Abdul Selling?

I'm thinking Abdul probably got hit with a bad ad, but still... Oh well, I'm sure he would say, "No such thing as bad publicity and, hey, they're paying me. Capitalism at work, my friend."

Presidential Race Gets Interesting

Saturday, Newt Gingrich scored a come-from-behind upset by knocking off Mitt Romney and the rest of the GOP field in winning the South Carolina Primary. Gingrich's win was huge, and it signals, yet again, that Republicans just aren't comfortable with Mitt Romney.

As I watched the coverage on Saturday night, I was struck by one statistic. Evangelical voters voted for Gingrich by a 60 to 40 margin over Romney and the field. This is Newt Gingrich, a man that is an admitted adulterer and, quite possibly, a fan of an "open marriage" that evangelicals are gravitating to. Evangelical voters just aren't in Romney's corner. I mean...they voted for Newt Gingrich. I don't get that one.

The longer that Gingrich is in "frontrunner" position; the more certain I am that he will implode. Eventually, Romney, I believe, will retake his position as frontrunner, but he needs to connect with Republicans. He needs to do it fast.

He needs to stop pretending that he's inevitable and get down and make connections. As Chris Matthews said the other night, Mitt needs to ditch the teleprompter. He needs to get down and find out what the populist message is out there. He's so clearly out of touch.

At this point, this nomination should be his to win. Like Nebraska to his Indiana, Romney is letting the field hang around and isn't putting the game away. It's up to him to spend this week grabbing this message by the you know whats and making it a comeback for him. If not, this is going to maybe get to Indiana.

The peculiar thing is that none of the candidates other than Ron Paul seem to have comparable resources to Romney and certainly any of the others would need even more help to compete with the President.

President Barack Obama

President Barack Obama benefited from the long primary season in 2008. It made him a better candidate to go up against John McCain. I don't think you can say the same thing for Mitt Romney. He's been lazy. To put it in football terms, so far, it appears that Romney was sitting on the football...then fumbled it and Newt lumbered in for a game tying touchdown to extend the game.

Nearly forgotten this time around in South Carolina was Ron Paul. He needs to work hard to Florida to finish third to keep hope alive, I think. I think further last place finishes will hurt his viability.

Finally, I think Rick Santorum is done. He won Iowa, but I just don't see a path to victory if evangelicals are willing to back a Gingrich campaign in a state like South Carolina. He certainly is not going to do well in Florida. This is down to a Gingrich vs. Romney fight there.

A win for Romney in Florida may settle the race a bit, but a win for Gingrich makes things look like we're going to be in for the long haul. That makes this a win for Obama...who unlike McCain four years ago...has the advantage of incumbency.

Giffords to Step Down

Gingrich Wins South Carolina Primary

Newt Gingrich won the South Carolina Primary. He is the Rasputin of 2012's Presidential campaign.

~~Rasputin~~ Gingrich trailed by double digits in the polls, but he surged back after a very tough week for Mitt Romney on the campaign trail and a couple of strong debate performances. Rick Santorum finished third, and Ron Paul brought up the rear.

Now, it's on to Florida. Romney has to get his legs back under him. I predict between now and the Florida Primary, Gingrich will do something to hurt himself. One way or another, Gingrich has to put an organization underneath him.

He will appear on Meet the Press tomorrow morning.

Friday Hodge Podge: No Opa to Sopa; Presidential Circus Moves South; Indiana Congressional Races on Radar

NO OPA to SOPA
Given the massive Wednesday internet protests by major websites (including friend of the blog Bil Browning’s Bilerico Project website), House Republican leaders appear to be moving away from the Stop Online Piracy Act or SOPA.

I must say, this is a rare moment in history that I completely agree with John Boehner, Eric Cantor, and other Republicans in the House. Seventh District Congressman Andre Carson is also an opponent of the measure.

The Protect IP Privacy Act or PIPA, the Senate version of the bill is moving forward, according to Democratic leader Harry Reid. President Barack Obama finds himself in opposition to both of the bills, and it’s doubtful that Congress could find the muster to overturn a veto. Thus, it appears that PIPA might be dead in the water, too…even as it moves forward.

I would not let up. Sometimes these types of bills can find their way to law riding on other bills. It’s important to remain alert and vigilant.

Presidential Circus Ring Moves to South Carolina Saturday; Obama Up on TV
Saturday’s South Carolina Presidential Primary will be an interesting one. Mitt Romney leads in the polls, but he’s seen his lead there eaten away slowly.

Also, the Iowa Caucus results have been changed. Rick Santorum is now leading the vote totals there by 30 something votes now in the certified results. Experts say the antiquated way votes are recorded by precinct captains in the Republican caucus may result in us never exactly knowing who won the Caucus. For now, it gives Santorum a victory without the actual experience of being able to get much momentum from it.

While the Republicans slug it out, President Obama has decided to take his campaign to the airwaves.

Blessed with incumbency and strong fundraising, Obama will be airing ads in critical states like Michigan, Ohio, Nevada and Virginia. Should the Republicans get in a slugfest with one another, Obama will surely benefit not only from his status as the almost assured nominee but from the way the Republicans are identifying each other with voters.

Look for an announcement soon about an official Indiana presence for the Obama campaign. Looks like he’s going to play in all 50 states and D.C. again!

Two Indiana Democratic Races Make DCCC Lists
The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee seems to believe Indiana’s 8th District will return to the “Bloody 8th” this year as it has made it a targeted “Emerging Race” district. In the 8th, Dave Crooks is expected to be taking on Republican incumbent Larry Buschon.

Buschon took the seat back for the Republicans when popular Democrat Brad Ellsworth ran for Senate in 2010. That move, precipitated by Evan Bayh’s decision not to seek reelection, left Trent Van Haaften with only a few months to get a campaign up and running.

In Indiana’s 2nd District, Brendan Mullen will likely face Jackie Walorski in November. The DCCC is targeting that race in its “Red to Blue” program. Of course, that’s funny because the district is currently blue. Current seat holder Joe Donnelly is hoping to move down the hall and become a U.S. Senator in November. The district took on a much more red hue with redistricting moving out Kokomo from the Congressional District.

Perry OUT...Endorses Gingrich

Rick Perry dropped out of the Presidential race today, and he endorsed Newt Gingrich.

Yesterday, failed politician Sarah Palin endorsed Gingrich. It also appears that Gingrich, the Rasputin of the 2012 Presidential Campaign, is riding a new wave of popularity and may have a second wind as the anti-Romney.

All I have to say is, REALLY?

I mean, as we enter crunch time of the 2012 primary campaign season, this is really the best the Republicans can do? They chase off the guy with the credentials (Jon Huntsman), jettison three crazy people (Herman Cain, Michele Bachmann, and Rick Perry) and we’re left with a flip-flopper (Mitt Romney), a celebrity (Ron Paul), a crazy person (Rick Santorum), and a retread has been with questionable character and a penchant for saying stupid things (Newt).

If a third party candidate can’t capture the hearts and minds of conservatives and Republicans this year, then I don’t know when it’s going to happen, and if Barack Obama doesn’t dust this field, then I will weep for my country.

Mitch Daniels, Chris Christie, and Mike Pence should be kicking themselves very hard for passing on this campaign season. Not only would they have been the best candidates in the Republican field, but they would have maybe had a chance in November. Personally, I think they stayed out because they know their best chance is in 2016…at least for Pence and Christie.

Perry’s miniscule support won’t swing anything. His leaving the race only takes away one source of comic relief and a former frontrunner for the nomination that burned out almost as quickly as he was lit.

Senate Law Intended to Close 4th Amendment Conundrum May Create More Problems

Last year, the Indiana Supreme Court reached a decision on Barnes v. Indiana that set liberty-minded Hoosiers into a tailspin. It essentially said that people don't have the right to resist the unlawful entry of police officers into their homes.

The knee jerk Indiana Senate has been at work to try to set the decision right by passing a law out of committee that gives people limited rights to resist law enforcement from trying to enter your home without a warrant.

The question is...would the law even apply to the Barnes v. Indiana situation? It appears that Senate Bill 1, the Indiana law intended to fix the issue raised in that Supreme Court case, also is maybe a bit problematic.

Senator Mike Young, who authored the bill, wrote it in such a way that a home owner would have the right to resist an unlawful entry of an officer in limited cases. Key under the bill is the identification of the person trying to gain entry. If a homeowner does not know it's an officer, then the bill gives them the right to use reasonable force, including physical force, to resist the law enforcement officer's unlawful entry into the home. If a person knows it is a police officer, then you can use reasonable force to keep them out of the home but not physical force.

The bill, however, immediately sets out the following situations where one may not resist:

1. An investigation of suspected domestic or family violence (as defined in Indiana Code)
2. The entry of a dwelling by a law enforcement officer who has a reasonable belief that a person inside the dwelling has been or is at risk of physical harm.
3. An entry into a residence by invitation of at least one (1) adult resident, unless one (1) ore more other adult residents.

Also included are provisions for an officer entering a dwelling in "hot pursuit" or an officer entering to catch an escaping criminal, or with a warrant.

Looking at the facts of Barnes v. Indiana, I'm not sure the new law just passed out of committee would apply.

Let me add in here that I am just a teacher; I am not a lawyer.

In Barnes v. Indiana, the officer responding to an incident was dispatched on a 911 call that was classified as a domestic violence call. That makes it easy to think that the officer might be in that frame of mind going in.

Upon arriving on the scene, the first responding officer found the husband, Richard Barnes and Mary Barnes in at minimum a major disagreement. Richard Barnes was getting his things and in an agitated mood and so was his wife Mary. It's hard to determine if the officer could have determined whether or not a person was at risk of harm, but it's also easy to see how they could.

I just don't think Senate Bill 1 would have helped Mr. Barnes be justified in keeping the officer out of his home. I don't think it touches, what I consider, the heart of the poor Supreme Court decision.

The big problem in the decision set down by the Supreme Court was the statement in the decision that the "right to reasonably resist an unlawful entry into a home is no longer recognized under Indiana law." Senate Bill 1 tries to provide the right, but I think it's sloppily written and will put law enforcement officials into tough situations.

I don't know how you fix the Supreme Court's decision, but I think remedies now available under Senate Bill 1 are problems now waiting to happen should it pass into law.

If I'm wrong on this, please set me straight my lawyer friends.

Daniels Once Opposed Right to Work; Facing Criticism from Fellow GOP Members

If Mitt Romney or Ron Paul or whoever survives the GOP Primary picks Governor Mitch Daniels as his running mate, he's going to find a flip-flopper on Right to Work.

It's just now making the mainstream, but Governor Daniels once wrote in a letter to Bill Dugan that he didn't believe Indiana needed Right to Work to succeed. The bad news is; the letter still exists. See it below.

Apparently, Mitch Daniels has a lot in common with Governor Mitt Romney; he will apparently say anything to get elected.

It hasn't been a particularly good few days for Mitch on the RTW debate. He's getting push back from his own party. The Lunch Pail Republicans have launched their own ads against Right to Work, and one of their members, David Fagan, told WTHR that they are ready to run Republicans for office that will not support Right to Work in the legislature.

Before you right him off as some RINO, you should know that Fagan was appointed by Governor Daniels to the Indiana Port Commission in 2007. He was also appointed by Daniels to the Law Enforcement Training Board (also appointed to that board by Governor Evan Bayh, Governor Joe Kernan, and Governor Frank O'Bannon). Besides being a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 150, Fagan held office in Portage.

Today should be an interesting day as Brian Bosma is promising to fine Democrats for not showing up in the legislature. We'll see what happens.

Big Week for Right to Work Fight

The Right to Work fight has entered what appears to be the fourth quarter as a deal last week brought the Democrats back to the House when the Republicans agreed to allow debate on a statewide referendum on Right to Work.

My good friend Erin Rosenberg brought up a great point on her Facebook last week, however, and I think I agree with her. While I really enjoy the idea of statewide voters deciding whether Indiana should still be one of the less than half states in the country with Right to Work, that this is what we elect our legislators for. We elect our lawmakers to lead and to represent us. We don't really elect them to throw the hard decisions back at us.

With that said, I understand what Pat Bauer is doing here. He's getting the deal he can get, and Brian Bosma is, too. Bosma knows that, in an election year, the worst thing he can do is make the Democrats out to be the heroes of organized labor to whip up the, no doubt, thousands of protesters that will appear at the Statehouse. Bauer understands that, in an election year, he probably can't keep walking out of the legislature with his caucus while trying to win back the Governor's Office. It's kind of like the two sides need each other.

While a referendum kicks the can down the street a little longer, both sides can claim some sort of victory if it passes to the voters. Dems will say that the people will now decide, and the GOP can say that progress has been made. Deep down though, Republicans should not want this to go to a referendum. There's too much on the line for them with the opinion polls being too ambiguous.

I guess the fight is on.

Daniels, GOP Returning Some Tainted Durham Money

Doesn't sound like it's all of what Tim Durham donated, but, according to the Indiana Business Journal and the Associated Press, the Governor and the Indiana GOP are going to return about $88,000 in contributions to Fair Finance, the bankrupt company Durham formerly ran and where he's accused of bilking investors out of huge chunks of change.

Daniels reportedly received a lot more than just the $10,000 his Aiming Higher PAC is returning. The Governor has received a reported $200,000 over the years from the disgraced businessman. Wonder if we'll see that money go back?

Until this time, Daniels had refused to give any of the money back saying that it had all been spent.

Jon Huntsman

Jon Huntsman has joined the ranks of the Republicans no longer running for President in 2012. According to reports, he's abandoning his run at the White House. The same reports say that he's going to endorse Mitt Romney...just eight days after his defense of his own service to the United States in the face of attacks from Romney.

Hopefully, this isn't the last we see of him. Perhaps this is just not his time.

McQuillen Greatly Over-exaggerates Council Disagreement

GOP Council Minority Leader, Mike McQuillen, was visibly angry over the Democratic decision to reduce seats for the GOP on key Council Committees at Monday's Council Meeting.

Abdul-Hakim Shabazz reports on his Indy Politics website that McQuillen says the Democrats' move essentially means there will be no support on key Council proposals to overturn a Mayor's veto. So, if, for example, the Dems try to pass a smoking ban and the Mayor vetoes it that maybe the Republicans won't help to override the veto.

What I found really funny was McQuillen's rhetoric, and I'm not the first person to point it out. We can debate whether the Dems may be going too far in reducing GOP representation on the committees, but McQuillen is saying that Democrats should "work with" the Republicans to ensure their proposals pass the Mayor's desk. That doesn't pass the smell test to me for a number of reasons.

First of all, it's highly unlikely that Republicans will buck their own Mayor to join the D's unless there is good reason. After all, in the four years they were in control, I can't hardly think of anything the Mayor and the Council majority disagreed on. It was pretty lockstep. Secondly, when things like redistricting, the parking deal, the water deal, the first bite at the smoking ban, many appointments, and a variety of other things came up when the Republicans were in charge, they didn't listen to the Democrats at all. Instead, they did EXACTLY what they wanted to do, and that was the Ballard Administration's bidding.

I'm not saying that it's a good or a bad idea for the Dems to do what they did, but certainly a smart man like McQuillen has to see the reason for the moves. I understand that he has a job to do, but it might have been better to let this one pass rather than be so visibly angry over it that it looked like he wanted to slam the 44-oz. Steak & Shake cup right in front of him on the desk to the floor on Monday night. Classy.

It just seems a little too early in the game to be griping and complaining over this when we just had a big fight over something similar as the GOP went out the door. Short memories on that side of the aisle, I guess.

Where Does Richard Lugar Live?

The Charlie White case that has been in the news for months now has put the spotlight on where politicians hang their hats and vote.

At one point, White took a sour grapes shot at former Indiana Senator Evan Bayh by questioning his residency since he's been out of office vs. where he should be registered to vote. Bloggers like my friend Paul Ogden have defended White, and I respect him for taking that unpopular position.

White might have had a better case had he gone after Richard Lugar, a sitting Senator, that apparently does not own an Indiana address and has been using a house he hasn't owned in, as Ogden has pointed out on numerous occasions, for three decades.

To be a Senator, you must satisfy three requirements spelled out in the United States Constitution. You must be at least 30 years of age (Lugar will be nearing 80 if reelected). You must be a U.S. Citizen for at least nine years at the time of election (Lugar has that one covered). Finally, you must be a resident of the state you are elected to represent. That one is still up in the air.

When Lugar is in Indiana, his campaign has admitted that he only lives in hotel rooms. He does own property in Decatur Township, but that is a large farm full of mostly trees. There is a small home adjacent to the farm, but I don't know if that is inhabited by anyone or if it even, at this point, is Lugar's property.

As Ogden points out, Lugar has been utilizing an address that he has not lived in for years as his Indiana address for BMV records as well as voting.

We all understand that Richard Lugar does not lose his residency of his state for federal service in the legislature from that state. He is free to live in the Washington, D.C. area, but does that mean that he can also use someone else's address for his voter registration and BMV records?

At best, it's a major oversight by a man out of touch with political reality. At worst, it could be a violation of election law.

Lugar's case also shows how stupid Indiana's Voter ID law is. If Lugar shows up with a drivers license or ID card with that address he's been using on it, he gets to vote because it only checks his name and photo. The address doesn't make a difference. Anyway, if he votes absentee, no ID is required.

If Richard Mourdock or Joe Donnelly don't make an issue out of this, then they're crazy.

I sent Senator Jim Tomes an e-mail, and I wanted to share it with you. I would encourage anyone else to send Senater Tomes a respectful e-mail as well about Senate Bill 251 that would allow a public or charter school board to require the reading of the Lord's Prayer at the start of a school day. In 2011, you wrote, "At some point, in a country and state where the people rule, we the people must decide what kind of role we want our government to take. Do we need a government nanny?"

Apparently, that does not extend to classrooms where teachers who are not Christian could be forced to read the Lord's Prayer to their students.

This is absolutely unacceptable. Please withdraw this bill. We have a First Amendment that students and teachers are free to exercise. Part of that is that the government shall not establish a religion, and this bill would do that.

I consider myself a Christian, but I also consider myself an American. Your bill is a slap in the face to our Constitution and our Bill of Rights as well as to the thousands of Hoosiers that do not worship as you do.

Withdraw your bill today.

Republican Senator Loses All Connection to Reality

Sometimes I use the phrase that I’ve been around long enough to know that I’ve seen it all. A bill introduced in the Indiana Senate yesterday once again proves that I haven’t seen anything.

Senator Jim Tomes, a Republican from Indiana’s 49th District in extreme southwest Indiana has introduced Senate Bill 251 that would allow a public or Indiana charter school board to require the reading of the Lord’s Prayer at the beginning of school each day.

Think about that: a public school REQUIRING the reading of the Lord’s Prayer. Think about a teacher being REQUIRED to read the Lord’s Prayer…even if they are not Christian.

I have no words for this one; none that I can put here anyway.

We elect some pretty interesting people to public office, don’t we?

In my research to find out a little more information about the good Senator, I found this tidbit from a 2011 guest column Tomes wrote.

New Hampshire Preview: Romney Must Win Big

As voters go to the polls in New Hampshire for the "First in the Nation" primary election, the big favorite in the polls is former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, but he had better deliver on that favorite status with a big win.

Romney should win in New Hampshire. These voters know him pretty well. He's been a constant fixture in politics in neighboring Massachusetts since 1994, and he ran for President in 2008 targeting New Hampshire heavily.

In that 2008 Primary, Romney did well in counties neighboring Massachusetts, Romney fell short in 2008 to John McCain who used the victory to propel himself forward to the eventual nomination. Romney got 31 percent of the vote. Tonight, he should easily outdistance the rest of the field, but the question will be who wins enough support to realistically continue on to South Carolina as well as who finishes in the second place spot.

So far, it's been Ron Paul finding himself riding shotgun to Romney. He's been right around 20 percent in the polls while the other candidates continue to jockey around. I think regardless of what happens that Rick Santorum, Newt Gingrich, and Rick Perry will continue to South Carolina. None of them really expect to win there in New Hampshire. This, however, is gut check time for Jon Huntsman.

I think Huntsman must break into the top four to continue his bid, and it's going to be a close fight for him. He could conceivably come in as high as second, but it's more likely that Paul finishes second. I think Santorum's surge from Iowa carries him home in third. Huntsman slots in fourth with Gingrich behind in fifth. Rick Perry should have dropped out after failing to make much impact in Iowa, but he clearly doesn't know when to quit. He will be a distant sixth and probably still go on to South Carolina and make his last stand instead of back to Texas where he belongs.

President Barack Obama continues to be in a strong position for reelection.

Democrats Begin Leadership of City-County Council Tonight

For just the second time in the history of Unigov, the Indianapolis/Marion County City-County Council will be headed by Democrats when the Council opens its first meeting tonight at 7:00 p.m. in the Beurt SerVaas Public Assembly Room down at the City-County Building.

Sixteen Democrats and 13 Republicans will begin a four year quest to make life better here in Indianapolis. There will be new faces, people to watch in the caucus, and much more as Republicans transition to the minority again and Mayor Greg Ballard has to begin to work across the aisle to get his agenda to match the Democrats' agenda on the Council. If there is no agreement, there will be gridlock, and government here in Indianapolis will be locked up tight like the government we've seen in Washington, D.C. over the past few years.

Things have not gotten off to the smoothest start between the two separate branches of government. By his public comment, Ballard mistakenly seems to think the Council is still to serve at his beck-and-call while the Democrats want to make it clear that the Council is its own entity.

All-in-all there are four or five Democrats on the Council that I think probably want to be Mayor someday in the future as well. Keeping their ambitions in check while trying to move the ball forward for the city will be extremely interesting to watch.

I do believe the Democrats got it right when they promoted a dynamic Councillor like Maggie Lewis to be the Council President. Like any new job, she will probably make a couple of mistakes, but I think she is definitely a bright and worthy leader for the caucus. She has already expressed a willingness to work with the Mayor. Now is the time to put words aside and make actions speak loudly.

National Anthem Bill Makes Indiana Laughingstock

As many of you may be aware right now, one of the bills being considered by the General Assembly this session takes aim at people singing the National Anthem at Indiana's public schools and institutions.

This bill, sponsored by Republican Vaneta Becker of Evansville, would charge the Indiana Department of Education to come up with performance standards, would force those people that sing the anthem at public school or university events to sign a document saying they will stick to those standards, and then fine them $25 if they don't. It's a silly, stupid, ridiculous bill, honestly. It's the kind of bill that should make people that support the freedoms of the First Amendment very worried.

Regardless, can we be honest about our National Anthem?

First of all, let me get this straight. There's nothing that moves me to tears like a beautiful rendition of the National Anthem. Many come to mind. I heard four young men from the Ben Davis Choir do a barbershop quartet version just the other day before a Ben Davis Lady Giants basketball game that I thought was just amazing. I stood and clapped for those guys long after most had sat down. I love my country, and I love my country's anthem.

The concept of a "national anthem" is something that honestly probably never crossed the Founding Fathers' minds when they were coming up with our nation's Constitution. So, the National Anthem isn't something sacred to me in that vein. Our National Anthem was originally a poem written by Francis Scott Key. He was witnessing the Battle of Fort McHenry during the War of 1812, and he penned the poem after seeing that the fort defenses held and the British did not take the fort. At some point, the poem was set to the words of a Scottish social club's song. Some have said that it was a drinking song. So, the National Anthem was never "written" but more "evolved" as a song.

The National Anthem became our National Anthem in 1931 when Herbert Hoover, no doubt needing a national pick-me-up, signed a Congressional Resolution. It apparently wasn't until World War II that it became commonplace for the National Anthem to be played or sung before sporting events. That's the background.

So, here we are. Where perhaps someday soon here in Indiana, someone will be fined for violating some ridiculous performance standards for taking a artistic liberty on a song that celebrates the country whose Constitution guarantees the freedom of taking artistic liberty in the first place.

Welcome to Indiana....where a performance like the one below could unfortunately someday get you fined.

I say this song belongs to no one. I don't like it when people disrespect it, but to say this young lady didn't do this song justice is absolutely crazy and sad. It's performances like that one that Becker's ridiculous overreach will target.

Eight votes!

On Tuesday, the Iowa Caucus came down to a three man race between Governor Mitt Romney, former Senator Rick Santorum, and Representative Ron Paul of Texas. As the evening waned, it became apparent that Ron Paul would not have the number of votes necessary to win, but after that, it became a neck-and-neck battle between Romney and Santorum.

I had predicted that either Paul or Santorum would win Iowa, and I didn't really think it would be close. I thought Romney could have finished as low as fourth. To me, I think Romney's win in Iowa, no matter how narrow, was mildly surprising, and I think it's a decent start for Romney. He still has miles to go before he's the best pal of the base of the party, but, eventually, I think that people will come around to him.

Santorum, however, showed that he's the latest candidate to carry the "Anti-Romney" designation. He did it at the right time, as the votes began in Iowa. I would argue that had the former Senator peaked any earlier, he would have been the same as any of the other "Anti-Romney" standard bearers. Santorum will now have to work over the next week to get some sort of organization together for the remainder of the campaign.

Paul had a nice steady night. With his loyal base, he remains the darkhorse most capable of upsetting Romney for the nomination.

The big losers in the Iowa Caucus were Rick Perry and Michele Bachmann. Both Perry and Bachmann were former national poll leaders that peaked too soon. Bachmann has ended her campaign, and Perry sounded on caucus night like a man that was considering dropping out though he will apparently continue on.

Jon Huntsman has been barely relevant, unfortunately, since he announced his campaign. I don't think anyone really notices what he's doing at this point. He has, however, put a great deal of effort into New Hampshire. If the does poorly there or fails to make a splash, it's curtains for a good candidate.

That leaves us with Newt Gingrich. His bitter, fear mongering, and, at times, angry concession speech in Iowa shows that the Newt-ster plans to hang around a while and give Mitt Romney and Ron Paul (NOT SANTORUM) some trouble.

The Republican circus heads off to New Hampshire where Romney is now the favorite. He needs to show more broad support. An eight-vote win again will be considered a loss for the former Massachusetts Governor.

Democrats Remain in Caucus on First Day of
2012 Short Session

The Democrats stopped the Right to Work Bill for one day in the Indiana General Assembly. That's one day Brian Bosma had to wait before getting "his precious".

It's one more day of Bosma looking foolish behind the Speaker's Podium at the Statehouse.

It's one more day that Indiana workers and their families have before the Republicans impose their will upon us.

Bosma says that Democrats violated the anti-walkout statute by staying in caucus all day. The statute provides for three days for Dems to hold up business in the Statehouse before $1,000 per day fines are levied. I say to the Democrats, do whatever it takes.

I would ask Speaker Bosma this...if the state is so far behind Right to Work legislation, what does he have to fear from statewide hearings that Democrats are asking for? It's a bill that will seriously damage the right of workers to collectively bargain for fair wages and working conditions. It's the Right to Work (FOR LESS).

Republican vendettas have no place in government when it comes to the wages and working conditions of working people in Indiana, just ask Indiana teachers. Teachers went through this fight and lost last year.

This time, Bosma and Governor Mitch Daniels have overplayed their hands. They've tried to squash dissent with outrageous limits on protests at the Statehouse. If they really wanted this bill to go through with a chance at support, they would give the minority what it want on hearings instead of the so-called fast track through to the Governor's Desk.

Democrats, keep doing what it takes. It's important work for Hoosiers.

Daniels Surrenders on Statehouse Access Rules

Governor Mitch Daniels proved by his actions yesterday that the new capacity rules at the Statehouse were politically motivated. He removed them as quickly as he put them into effect.

As you remember, the Governor announced last week that the Statehouse capacity would be set at 3,000 persons including the number of people working at the people's house. Before the ink was dry Democrats and other civil libertarians were crying foul, but the Governor proved once again that he's no Scott Walker.

It's not known if some of the other crowd control walls and things will remain outside the legislative chambers. I was told by a legislator that these recently went up to apparently keep Hoosiers from seeing their government at work.

Daniels is nothing if not pragmatic. He knew that these rules likely would not stand up in court because of the exceptions that had been granted for lobbyists and other groups. When it was announced that a religious-based prayer ceremony would have attendees check in through the West Door to avoid the "general public" checking in at the East Door, this was a decision he had to make.

I have to credit the Governor for not squashing dissent. Now, I urge that dissent to be loud, be proud, but be respectful of the People's House, too.

Carson Amendments Singed Into Law

Parts of the controversial National Defense Authorization Act have made civil libertarians cringe, but Congressman Andre Carson managed to slip in a couple of great amendments to help our troops returning from war and military families plan for the future.

To be fair, it should be noted that Congressman Carson voted against the bill, and I thank him for his vote.

Carson Amendments Provide Significant Improvements to Programs Serving Military Families

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Over the weekend, President Barack Obama signed into law the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2012, a bill that includes two amendments authored by Congressman André Carson (D-IN).

Congressman Carson’s first amendment, which contains provisions of his Service Members Mental Health Screening Act, requires the Department of Defense to take into account health records from past deployments and military activity during mandatory pre- and post-deployment mental health assessments. Under the current law, screenings from past deployments are not shared between units, inhibiting comprehensive understanding of the mental health challenges facing deployed service men and women.

The amendment was inspired by Indianapolis resident Gregg Keesling, whose son, Army Specialist Chancellor Keesling, committed suicide in June 2009 while on his second deployment in Iraq. Specialist Keesling had been previously deployed with another unit where he suffered from mental health issues. These issues were not considered in the assessment he received prior to his second deployment.

“It changes the lack of information-sharing that currently exists,” Mr. Keesling said of Congressman Carson’s amendment. “If this was in place prior to my son’s second deployment, it could have saved his life just like it will for so many service members who will be deploying in the future.”

“We provide some of the best health care in the world to our service members who are wounded in combat. Sadly, we can’t say the same thing about those suffering from invisible wounds,” Congressman Carson said. “These brave men and women make extraordinary sacrifices and face unimaginable challenges. They deserve to receive the best possible mental health care, where and when they need it.”

Congressman Carson’s second amendment is the Military Families Financial Preparedness Act, which seeks to put military families on a path towards long-term financial stability upon returning to civilian life. Under this legislation, mandatory pre-separation counseling sessions will include information on budgets, saving, credit, and mortgages and will help veterans and their spouses to create a long-term financial plan.

“Our men and women in uniform have served our nation bravely, both at home and abroad. After his second inauguration on Sunday and a speech more notable for its brevity than vision, Mayor Greg Ballard apparently met with the media.

As I sat in line at the CVS in Plainfield (long story there, but let's just say it was my SECOND trip), a brief story about Ballard's inauguration and that media session aired on WIBC.

The story said, of course, that Ballard was sworn in at the Indiana War Memorial on Sunday. It also mentioned that the Democratic Council Caucus was sworn in two hours later at another location. So, how does Ballard plan to work with the Democratic Caucus? "If they come to us with a reasonable proposal, then I'm sure we'll listen," Ballard told WIBC.

Huh?

Perhaps the question that prompted the soundbite was something different than how it was used in the story, but, if not, Ballard only plans to listen to the Democrats and their proposals? REALLY? Maybe vision isn't the only thing he's lacking.

Without a Council that he and his handlers can push around, how does he expect to get anything done by only listening to the majority caucus and its President Maggie Lewis?

Clearly Mayor Ballard doesn't understand what the Democrats seem to already...that the business of moving forward this city will require more than listening to each other's proposals and then retreating to a corner. This isn't about party or scoring political points. It's going to take real work. Hopefully, at some point over the next few weeks, the Mayor will have an epiphany.

Special Treatment in State House Access?

Yet another battlefield has opened in the controversial changes in the capacity and access to the Indiana State House.

As you may remember last week, an executive order by Mitch Daniels set the capacity of the Statehouse at 3,000 people including those there working. That meant an end to some of the large crowds that assembled last year that successfully fought off Right to Work. Of course, those were union crowds. If you're lucky enough to get in to the Statehouse, then you could be removed if your sign is too big or your chants and cheers were too loud. It also clearly set up standards for entry and exit to the building. The East Door was explicitly set up as the entrance for the public.

Well, it appears that's not the case for every group, according to Associated Press reports. The Capitol Commission will host its 8th Annual Prayer Service on Wednesday. Unlike other people that may becoming into the State House on the first day of the legislative session, the Capitol Commission's guests may enter the West Door provided that they present this e-mail from a state agency. The Indiana Democratic Party points out there is a key sentence in that e-mail document. "Guests may use the east entrance of the State House but please note the east entrance will be for general public and may experience long delays."

Therefore, union organizers and supporters are telling their people wanting access to the State House tomorrow to also print out the e-mail and present it for access at the West Doors of the State House. The e-mail was posted on the website of the Capitol Commission for anyone to access.

The new capacities and changes to access to the State House aren't the only changes you'll see. A frustrated state legislator told me that protesters or people wanting to see the legislature in action can no longer easily look through the windows of the House chamber by the way new crowd control walls have been built. "They should have just blocked over the windows if they didn't want people looking in them. It's ridiculous," said the legislator.

It is ridiculous. This is the people's house and the new rules are clearly politically motivated...especially when it appears certain that some religious groups are getting special access rules over others.

It's Here! Presidential Race Kicks Off!

Tomorrow, caucus-goers in Iowa will begin the process of electing a President in 2012. It's always an interesting time in America as voters begin to take a fresh look at where we are as a country.

The Returning Champion

President Barack Obama

This year, President Barack Obama will be coming back for the opportunity to have four more years in the White House. Obama has built a record that's both different and the same as past U.S. Presidents. Given recent tracking poll information, the President seems to be doing a bit better and his prospects for reelection are improving.

The reelection prospects improve even more when you look at the Republican candidates for President. It's not a group of people that really inspires people outside of each candidates' base. Let's handicap the field of major Republican candidates.

Likely Republican Nominee

Former Massachusetts
Gov. Mitt Romney

Mitt Romney has the most money, and he has the best organization. Romney has obviously been in this with the idea that it's a marathon and not a sprint as he has not reacted in any knee-jerk manner to the several times that pretenders have appeared in front of him in the polls. On top of all this, Romney is incorporating the lessons he learned from the mistakes his campaign made in 2008. Now, after really finding himself down throughout most of the caucus season, he finds himself in the lead in many polls just a few days before the caucus begins in Iowa.

Romney is best-positioned to take on President Obama. Obama will have tons of campaign cash, and Romney has the ability to raise it. Even if he does not win the Iowa Caucus, make no mistake that he is the candidate to beat the rest of the way.

Darkhorse

Rep. Ron Paul, R-TX

Ron Paul is the darkhorse in all of this. While the persistent allegations of skeletons in his closet persist, Paul has the most passionate and dedicated supporters of any candidate on the Republican side. Paul also appeals to some Democrats and some independent voters with his anti-war and isolationist views.

Paul also has a tremendous organization that has put him in position to be the last out against Romney. If Romney makes some missteps, then I think Paul could really put pressure on him from conservatives because of his loyal and unwavering following. I think he fares much worse against Obama in a General Election fight.

Dropouts

Former Sen. Rick Santorum

Rick Santorum may win the Iowa Caucus, but that will be the highlight of his campaign. Santorum has picked up the designation of the "anti-Romney" too late to make any headway. I hear his campaign has few dollars and little organization past Iowa. A win in Iowa will put him on the map briefly, but he will quickly fade away as the primaries start.

Newt Gingrich

Newt Gingrich has moved from the top of the polls to also-ran about as quickly as some of the other candidates that we've seen top the national polls. He was left for dead in this campaign over the summer when he had a mass exodus of campaign staffers, but he found himself to be the "anti-Romney" conservative candidate until he started to open his mouth in national interviews. The tip of the iceberg for his downfall appeared to be when he made controversial comments about potentially arresting federal judges he disagreed with. Now, he's found his polling numbers and support in a free fall. When he was left off his adopted home state's ballot for the Virginia Primary, it made matters worse. Gingrich may stay in this a while because he has nothing left to lose, but his comments a few weeks back that he thought he would be the nominee now seem hilarious.

Texas Governor Rick Perry

Rick Perry is candidate whose entry into the race was quickly followed by lots of early support. Once the Texas Governor was put in the spotlight of the media and began to show, frankly, a seeming lack of intelligence that would make George W. Bush look like a genius, he started to back up. Perry has money and an organization, but the passion that followed his entry into the race really has cooled off and his recent "Hail Mary" moves like the Strong ad (that has become one of the most disliked videos in YouTube history) and other missteps have pushed him to drop-out status. Expect Perry to hang around for a while, though.

Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-MN

Michele Bachmann started out so well, but her penchant for saying stupid things found her sliding backwards in the polls. Bachmann has proven to be plenty good in a debate, but she is not so good on the stump. Among her greatest hits, calling Concord, New Hampshire the starting place of the American Revolution, confusing Waterloo, Iowa's own John Wayne Gacy with John Wayne and many more. Bachmann has proven that she is someone that might someday be ready for a national stage, and she has proven that she is far more ready to be President than someone like Sarah Palin, but that's honestly not saying much. I think many of you are far more ready to be President than the reality tv star. Bachmann will go back to Minnesota soon enough, but it wouldn't surprise me to see her run for a bigger office than U.S. House, someday.

Jon Huntsman

Jon Huntsman may be the most reasonable candidate on the Republican side, but that's because many of us on this side of the aisle see things as Democrats see things. Huntsman was hoping to get some of Ronald Reagan's mojo when he picked the same spot as the Great Communicator to announce his campaign, but it just has not worked out. It's too bad. Huntsman is a thoughtful politician with a very impressive resume as both a former Ambassador to China and Governor of Utah. That immediately puts him at a disadvantage in a Republican field.

In future blog posts, I'll take a look at some of the other candidates that might make a difference this campaign season, and there are a few that could legitimately make a splash in a close election.

For the first time since January 1, 2008, the Democrats are in control of the Indianapolis/Marion County City-County Council.

I was honored to attend a swearing-in ceremony that included a crowd that could not even fit in the Indy Fringe Theater earlier today. It was a crowd that included dignitaries, elected officials, former candidates, and media, but the vast majority of the people that were there were just involved citizens of Indianapolis. They came to watch a Council that they voted for and worked to elect become the Council of our city.

John Layton, Marion County Sheriff, said it best when he said that he had referred to the Council as, "My Council," a few times. He got to thinking that it sounded a little strange for an elected official to refer to the Council in that manner, but Layton said, "The fact is that not only is this my Council; it's your Council, and it's everyone's Council."

Congressman Andre Carson spoke calling this the most "diverse and inclusive" City-County Council in the history of the city. This, I think, was a reference to the fact that we now have the first openly-gay countywide officeholder in ~~Indiana~~ Marion County history on this Council in Zach Adamson. As always, Carson is right. It is a diverse group.

That diversity was also shown by the crowd that attended. Chief Paul Ciesielski was there from IMPD. As far as Republicans in the house, the always classy Councillor Marilyn Pfisterer was the only sitting Republican that I saw that broke ranks with her caucus and attended the ceremony.

Republicans had been sworn in earlier at the Mayor's Inauguration, but it didn't have to be that way. The Democrats actually had reached out to the Republicans only to never get an RSVP from them on whether they would participate in a separate, joint swearing-in. I'm told that as a caucus, the Democratic majority thought it was important to make a distinction between the legislative and executive branches of city government.

That's why the Dems were surprised to receive an invitation to the Mayor's Inauguration that had all 29 City-County Councillors listed on it as being sworn in at the same ceremony with the Mayor. I'm told that no one in the Democratic Majority had any communication with the Mayor's Office, the Inauguration Committee, or the Republican Caucus. So, the Republicans ended up swearing in with Ballard, and the Dems canceled the reservation at the Central Library for the joint swearing-in and moved it to the Indy Fringe Theater.

All-in-all, these are just ceremonies, but I credit Pfisterer, the former Council Vice President, for being there with the Democrats as they were sworn in. She's one of the best on that side of the aisle.

Now, the hard work of governing begins. With Maggie Lewis at the helm of the Council, it's going to be a much different way of doing business than it was under Ryan Vaughn. There will no longer be an open rubber stamp available. Greg Ballard is going to have to be a negotiator, and the Democrats are going to have to give, too.

Bottom line, the next four years have a lot of twists and turns in store for us, and I'm interested to see where we go!

Obama Getting Heat on Vacation Cost

A well-meaning conservative friend of mine complained about the cost of President Barack Obama's Hawaiian Christmas vacation on my Facebook page today. This got me to thinking. Thankfully, due to the internet, it was easy to find the statistic I wanted.

President Obama's vacation to his home state (yes, his home STATE) is costing the U.S. taxpayers in the neighborhood of $4 million. That's a lot of money, but that's because the President of the United States never travels light no matter who is in the office.

What has been granted to other Presidents that doesn't seem to be getting granted to Obama is that they all have a "vacation home" where they spend time for holidays. Ronald Reagan spent holidays on a ranch in California. George H.W. Bush would often go off to Kennebunkport, Maine. The Clintons loved time in Martha's Vineyard. Of course, George W. Bush spent 487 days on the Prairie Chapel Ranch in Crawford, Texas.

While George W. Bush did draw criticism for the amount of time he was out of the office and in Crawford, I don't recall anyone considering the cost of that trip. That's why I don't get why Obama doesn't get the same courtesy to holiday anywhere he wants to.

Listen, we elect Presidents to lead, and I give them broad latitude in finding ways to relax. So, let's extend that same courtesy that every President in the last 30 or so years has gotten to Barack Obama.

About two weeks before Greg Ballard was reelected Mayor of Indianapolis, Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels stood on a podium with Ballard and Litebox founder Bob Yanagihara and called the businessman "a visionary." That assessment has been thrown into doubt in recent weeks as details have emerged about the Litebox founder's business dealings in other states.

Today, Governor Mitch Daniels admitted that he jumped too soon. WRTV reports that the Governor said he has put the endorsement of the Litebox deal on his "list of mistakes" he keeps in his office.

This cannot be good news for Ballard and Develop Indy that continue to try to put lipstick on this pig of a deal and try to make it look like something that might actually get off the ground. Point of fact, it might. But still, it just seems incredibly unlikely.

Swearing-in Details

Mayor Greg Ballard will be sworn-in on Sunday. The ceremony begins at 1:00 p.m. at the Indiana War Memorial. The Republican City-County Council Caucus will apparently also be sworn in at that time.

The Republicans turned down a request from the majority Democratic Caucus to have a joint swearing-in on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. at the IndyFringe Theatre. Dems say they asked the Republicans before their event was scheduled. Regardless, on Sunday, the new Council and the Mayor's second term will begin.

The Star reports that Ballard will not give many specifics to his second term in his inaugural speech. Why would we expect them now? I honestly still don't think the guy has a plan. Happy New Year, Mr. Mayor.

Incidentally, Democratic Lawrence Mayor Dean Jessup will be sworn in on Sunday as well at 1:30 p.m. in the City of Lawrence Government Center. Jessup knocked off Paul Ricketts. Dennis Buckley will be sworn in as Mayor of Beech Grove. At press time, I do not have those arrangements.

Delph's Journey

While his fellow legislators get ready for the 2012 short session of the Indiana General Assembly, Mike Delph will be trying to get Rick Santorum through the Iowa Presidential Caucus.

The caucus, which, by the way reportedly will not require photo identification for participation, takes place on Tuesday, January 3. Delph says he will be back in town for the legislative session on January 4.

Delph is a lightning rod in Indiana with conservatives adoring him and liberals not adoring him...to put it nicely. I think Delph is a nice guy, but I think his politics are completely crazy. He probably thinks the same thing about me, I guess.

In Memoriam: Ben Breedlove, A Kid I Never Met

As I was doing my normal Facebooking today, I came across this story of Ben Breedlove.

According to the Huffington Post, he was an 18-year-old Austin teen with a serious heart condition. On Christmas, Ben passed away from a heart attack. The two videos he left behind will chill you, break you down, but make you smile too.

I hope that he's feeling the love and no pain now. Thanks to him for sharing his brave story.

Non-existent Gun Rights Debate Ignites in Kroger Case

A gun-toting Kroger employee shot, and killed a robber inside a Kroger store on Monday evening. Now, a gun-rights debate has sprung up with this employee as a hero.

Here are the facts that we know. ~~A 20-something would-be robber~~ Twenty-six-year-old Jeremy Atkinson allegedly placed a gun or a gun-like object against the ~~head~~ back of an employee of the Kroger store. This robber, according to reports, forced this female employee into the office area where he was shot in the face by another Kroger employee, 24-year-old Elijah Elliott. Later, the robbery suspect died at ~~Wishard Hospital~~ St. Vincent Hospital of wounds sustained in the incident.

Support has poured in for the shooter in this case. I think that support is well-placed. This was an heroic act. Elliott was defending his fellow employee, and it appears that he used a gun...wherever it came from...in self defense. People are jumping to all sorts of conclusions like Kroger will fire him for carrying a gun to work. We simply don't know that, and we still don't know all the the facts. Remember Indiana Law allows an employee to carry a gun to work if you lock it away in your vehicle.

Officials say an arrest is unlikely in the case, so it looks like a crime did not occur. Remember, Kroger is a union shop. I would think that those union dues that Kroger employees pay (assuming he wasn't management) will come in handy if Kroger decides to fire Elliott.

Right now, this is a guns-rights debate that really isn't a debate at all until something else happens.

Well, it's been a few busy days for the blog, but things will calm down for the next few days...at least here.

I want to wish all of you a Merry Christmas! I hope everyone is able to spend some time with family and friends, and I want to thank all of you for the love you have shown to me by reading this blog over the past year and throughout the past few years. It's much appreciated, and I will always be grateful.

Ballard Leaves Wiggle Room for Third Term

Mayor Greg Ballard did a sit down interview with John Stehr of WTHR-13 that was broadcast just a few minutes ago.

Ballard says he plans to step aside at the end of this term unless he can't accomplish everything he wants to accomplish this term. Stehr pushed him to see if he would try to run for another office because, in Stehr's words, he's a pretty "viable" candidate. Ballard refused to take the bait.

In the interview, Ballard said that his two main focuses will be transportation and education. The latter is, of course, something he talked little about on the campaign trail. Ballard seems to have cheated off the homework of his opponent, Melina Kennedy, and even Libertarian Chris Bowen who talked more about education than the Mayor did during the 2011 election season.

It's an interesting interview. I would assume WTHR will post it on their website.

Stay Put on Order to Remove White

Judge Lou Rosenberg has issued a stay on his ruling which would remove Charlie White from office until December 29.

On that date, a hearing, requested by White's attorney, will be conducted, according to WISH-TV.

Experts are saying that this is only the beginning. They say this case is likely to end up in the Indiana Supreme Court before it's decided.

As a reminder, this is NOT a political issue. Indiana law requires Vop Osili to be installed as Secretary of State as the second-highest vote getter for the office. Osili was elected in 2011 to the City-County Council from District 15.

Reactions Get Ugly on Facebook

A Facebook page linked to a man that is apparently the father of Secretary of State Charlie White had a very inflammatory reaction yesterday to the ruling by Marion County Circuit Court Judge Lou Rosenberg that could end up tossing Charlie White from office.

The offending post appears to have been deleted and the page scrubbed, but screenshots began circulating of it, and someone left a comment on my blog last night about it that I did not publish because I could not verify it.

The hateful, inappropriate, and anti-semitic post is gone, but I think it's significant that someone who is apparently ~~White's own father~~ the possible computer hacker doesn't believe ~~his own son~~ Charlie White has any culpability in this. He or she is saying, "Blame the judge," and he or she doing it in a completely offensive and disrespectful manner...to both Judge Rosenberg and his daughter, Erin, who is now working at the International Criminal Court in the Hague.

Makes you sick, doesn't it?

Apparently this was left as a response on an IndyStar article. Having left a response from my Facebook page before on the IndyStar's new comments section, I know that I've had to be logged in to my account to post. That, of course, doesn't mean that Mr. White's Facebook could not have been hacked or otherwise compromised.

I hope that was the case, in fact.

The Indianapolis Star reports that Darrell White says his Facebook page was hacked. The incident was reported to the police in Westfield. Given that information, I have decided to pull down the picture of the offending post and edit my previous post. I will give him the benefit of the doubt on this one.

We’ve known for more than a year that Vop Osili should be Secretary of State because Republican Charlie White committed vote fraud as a candidate for the office.

We’ve been fighting to hold White accountable for his actions since before the 2010 election.

Today, justice was served.

A Marion County Circuit Court ruled that White was ineligible as a candidate for office in 2010 and ordered the Indiana Recount Commission to certify Vop as the winner of that election and the rightful Secretary of State.

Rosenberg Rules: White Ineligible for Secretary of State

Charlie White should not have been on the November 2010 ballot.

In a decision handed down earlier today, Marion County Circuit Court Judge Lou Rosenberg found that Charlie White was ineligible to serve as Indiana Secretary of State when he was elected and remanded the case back to the Indiana Recount Commission to certify the second-highest vote getter, Vop Osili, to serve in the office. White is certain to appeal the decision.

Either way, questions surrounding White's voter registration were key in the case. Rosenberg wrote in his decision, "The fact that Mr. White knowingly registered in the wrong precinct is sufficient to render him ineligible for the office of Secretary of State. Whether or not he believed that his registration complied with the law is irrelevant."

Rosenberg also said that his Court's decision is not implying that White's actions constituted a crime or were fraudulent. "Those questions are for another court at another time," wrote Rosenberg.

I guess we'll see where this goes from here. Had White stepped aside before the election in 2010, all of this would have been avoided. Unfortunately, it looks like he's reached the point of no return.

One thing is true. If installed in the office, Indiana can have confidence that Vop Osili will be a great Secretary of State.

Delph Picks Santorum

If you are a GOP Primary voter in Indiana, your chances of your vote actually meaning something are slim to none. The Indiana Primary is in May, and the nomination is typically sewn up tight by then.

Of course, there's always the chance that there could be a protracted primary season, but that's looking rather unlikely. Even if Newt Gingrich performs well in the early stages of the primaries, he doesn't have much money or an organization for a long fight into the spring. Unless he gets a huge influx of cash, this looks like a race between Mitt Romney and Ron Paul.

Anyway, Senator Mike Delph wants you to know that he's supporting Rick Santorum.

Santorum, of course, is one of the most anti-gay and anti-immigration candidates on the ballot. It's no wonder why Delph would choose to support him. So, if Mike Delph's opinion means anything to you...there you go. Vote for the man named Santorum. Just don't Google him.

Outgoing City-County Councillor Paul Bateman and two others have been indicted by a federal grand jury on eight counts of wire fraud and 10 counts of money laundering, according to the Indianapolis Star.

If convicted, the Star reports that it's conceivable that Bateman could spend the rest of his life behind bars with a total of 260 years in prison if the maximum sentence were given to him. Also indicted by the feds were Manuel Gonzalez and Michael Russell.

Bateman, a Democrat, is the latest example of a City-County Councillor in trouble with the law. Lincoln Plowman, a Republican, was convicted earlier this year in a bribery and attempted extortion case and is serving 40 months in prison.

Why do City-County Councillors seem to do this? Well, I don't think there's an easy answer. Why do seemingly good people go bad? It makes no sense to me. Granted, this is just an indictment, and Bateman will now have his day in court, but the things he's accused of doing are just despicable.

What does make sense is the aggressiveness with which Joe Hogsett is doing his job as U.S. Attorney. It seems like every few days, the U.S. Attorney's Office in Indianapolis is in the news for something. Certainly, Barack Obama has to be proud of his appointee.

White To Stand Trial Jan. 30

"Mr. Indictment" Charlie White

Indiana's ~~Embarrassment~~ Secretary of State, Charlie White, will stand trial on seven felony charges on January 30. A Hamilton Superior Court Judge tossed White's motion out of court that would have dismissed the charges, according to the Indianapolis Star.

As the Star points out, if White is convicted of any of the charges, he will lose his job as Secretary of State under Indiana Law.

Indiana voters knew this date could come, but they elected White anyway. Under Indiana law, Vop Osili would become Secretary of State as the second-highest vote getter in the race. Osili has, of course, been elected to the City-County Council in District 15.

That's putting the cart WAY before the horse. The smartest thing for White to do to ensure his party holds on to the seat is resign now. He is innocent until proven guilty, but how much time will he have to devote to his Secretary of State job while this trial progresses? It's a Presidential election year, and Indiana figures to be a player again in this one.

Tendering his resignation is the best course of action for the voters of Indiana as well. White should resign immediately before his trial begins and allow someone that can focus completely on the job to take the office allowing him to focus completely on his own defense. Of course, Charlie won't do that. He's already been asked to resign by Mitch Daniels and other Republican leaders.

Looks like White's content to let this embarrassment to the state play out. Congratulations Indiana. He's what you wanted.

Sometimes, when I'm on vacation, I just get to thinking.

My pace of thinking accelerates when I read the constant stream of info I see on Facebook and Twitter. This one today...well it really got me thinking.

It's about gay marriage and a pastor somehow trying to convince his flock that liberals want to destroy marriage by allowing gays to unite in holy matrimony and then urging his flock to support Newt Gingrich.

That makes no sense.

Marriage is, in my mind, a religious bond between two people. It's not a religious bond between a man and a goat or a woman and a zebra. It's not a religious bond between fourteen people. It's one person and one person. Marriage is between the people and their church. It has no place in government. It has no place in the Constitution. It has no place anywhere but a place of worship.

That's too simple, though. The law has evolved to include definitions of marriage that, frankly, are outdated and outmoded. We need to redefine the legal definition of marriage to include one person and one person. Is it that hard?

Furthermore, no one has done more to destroy the holy bond of marriage in the current Presidential race than Newt Gingrich. The oft-married one has been unfaithful in the past, and he has done the only thing that's out to destroy marriage...divorce.

That's right. DIVORCE. That's what's out to destroy marriage. It's not the men and women in this country that are fighting everyday to be included. They want equal rights with what straight couples have. Why is it so hard to see that this is an equal rights issue under the law and not a mission to destroy the institution of marriage? In fact, I would argue that same sex marriage only STRENGTHENS it.

Same sex marriage is legal in countries like Canada. I have yet to see the locusts attack there. There's been no plagues, and, besides the bird flu scare a few years back in Toronto, life seems to be progressing normally there.

It's time to bring equality to America and bring the legal definition of marriage into the 21st Century.

Colin Cowherd calls sports franchises that are in disarray, "dumpster fires." Well, here in Indiana, we Democrats have a major dumpster fire in our own back yard. That's the Indiana Democratic Party.

Details are emerging from the mess that happened yesterday that ended with Dan Parker rescinding his resignation and staying on as Indiana Democratic Party Chair. The mess that emerged has split the party statewide and won't make things any easier for John Gregg to get support in key areas of Democratic strength in Lake and Marion Counties.

What does all of this mean? Well, I think it shows (if you didn't already see it) how weak the Indiana Democratic Party is. There is no longer anyone big enough to settle these disputes. In past years, it was always up to Evan Bayh or the state's highest-ranking party elected official to step in and settle things. There would be some sort of deal made and we would go happily about our way.

There really is no one today at the state level anymore with the kind of clout to do these things. There's no Frank O'Bannon or Evan Bayh or Birch Bayh or even a strong Democratic Indiana House Speaker to solve these issues before it got out of a "dark, smoky room." What chair presided over this collapse? Dan Parker.

Here's the thing, though. Sometimes out of a dumpster fire, the ashes can provide the seeds for a new start. The Indiana Democratic Party could not be in worse shape statewide, and the details are almost depressing...only 13 seats in the Indiana Senate, a near supermajority for Republicans in the Indiana House now and friendly maps for 2012's elections, no statewide officeholders in the executive branch, two-straight demoralizing losses in Gubernatorial elections to a Republican that may be a national player come this summer, and the hits just keep on coming. The only way to go is up.

It's up to the factions to pick up the banner now and demand change. Dan Parker is, as I've said before, someone I like as a person, but he's not the answer. Apparently, John Gregg supports him, and that seems to be enough right now for him to keep his job.

The sad thing is that all of this elects the Republican in 2012 even more easily. John Gregg could be the candidate to stop it, and I'm hoping that he can still do it. A fractured state party doesn't help, and this is too important of an election to hand it to Mike Pence or Jim Wallace. We need a Democrat in the highest levels of state government. Hopefully, we can pull together the pieces and muster a challenge for the GOP.

Yesterday, Parker sent out this news release regarding his decision to continue to serve as party chair.

Star Reports Three in Running for State Dem Chair

Three of my good friends are in the running for Indiana State Democratic Party Chair.

Marion County Democratic Party Secretary Sarah Riordan, former Marion County Democratic Party Executive Director Joel Miller, and former Indiana Auditor candidate Sam Locke appear to be the three candidates that are interested in the Indiana Democratic Party Chair-ship.

All three would be excellent choices, so the party will be in good hands any way it goes. That's good news for me as a rank-and-file Democrat.

Tim Jeffers, who had said he had interest in the job, has decided not to pursue the job, according to the Indianapolis Star.

Like Parker, all three of the candidates for the job are very young. When he was named chair in 2004, Parker was the youngest Party Chair in the country. A move to one of these three names would also signal a break from the Evan Bayh-era of Indiana Democratic politics.

This should be an interesting race. The Star also reports that the Indiana Democratic Party Central Committee could pass on all three candidates and keep looking. All three candidates have experience managing a county-level party...Miller and Riordan in the state's largest county and Locke in Floyd County, which neighbors Louisville.

All three will be excellent chairs, and let's hope the State Party decides on one of them today at 10:00 a.m.

Ballard Steals Kennedy Idea

Greg Ballard's most-staunch supporters spent most of the last year telling us that Melina Kennedy's focus on education was misplaced because the Mayor of Indianapolis had little to do with education.

Well, it looks like the man at the top of the ticket didn't agree.

Ballard has announced that he's searching for a Deputy Mayor of Education. This would be a third Deputy Mayor. No word where the money would come for this position, and there was no credit to Melina Kennedy. Does this mean that I can call Ballard's Deputy Mayor for Education a czar?

I credit the Mayor for seeing a need. Just wish he'd be more honest about where he got the idea.

Dan Parker Reactions; Where To Go From Here

The last couple of days people have asked me for my reactions to Dan Parker's decision to step down as Indiana Democratic Party Chair. My reaction was surprise.

Given the current dearth of any big name Democrats in any big name offices here in Indiana, I didn't know of anyone big enough to push Parker out. I thought he was becoming entrenched. After all, the most powerful Democratic elected official in Indiana is arguably Marion County Prosecutor Terry Curry. That means that Parker could have conceivably stayed until he wanted to leave. Perhaps that is what happened here.

I like Dan Parker personally, and I have been critical of him at times on this blog. I want to wish him the best in the future. In the end, it was time for a change given where the Indiana Democratic Party stands in this state right now.

As far as replacements go, seems like the Dems are looking at CSO Architects Executive Tim Jeffers to replace him. Jeffers is a former Chief of Staff of John Gregg and managed Jim Schellinger's failed 2008 Gubernatorial campaign. Reading between the lines, it's easy to think that maybe Gregg, who will head the party's statewide ticket in 2012, may have given Parker a nudge out the door. I haven't heard that personally, but the tea leaves could be read to show that.

Regardless of what happens, the next Indiana Democratic Party Chair has a big job. It's kind of like the job the Colts are going to have over the next few years. How to rebuild to ultimately win elections.

My advice to the new chair: don't ignore your liberal base, and don't pander to the center. Recruit good candidates that are true to their core values. Finally, show people what Democrats stand for and listen to them as well.

Jeffers' resume is impressive, but it seems like we could be looking at more of the same in the leadership of the party as well. Jeffers is a former Evan Bayh staffer...just like Parker.

I guess I have to give him the benefit of the doubt for now.

Off Daily Schedule

Rick Perry Ad Now Most Unpopular YouTube Video Ever

Well, there may be one person out there that likes Rick Perry's controversial "Strong" ad, after all.

The homophobic ad that somehow equates the ending of the Don't Ask Don't Tell policy by the Obama Administration to the totally bogus idea that kids can't celebrate Christmas or pray in school now has passed Rebecca Black's Friday video in dislikes with over 300,000.

Reached for comment, Black said, "We we we so excited."

Ok...that part is made up. What does it say about the state of our country now that a video attacking the gay community is now the most disliked video on YouTube.

I think it says that, while we have a long way to go, we've come a long way, too.

Incidentally, the picture above shows that someone in Rick Perry's campaign didn't realize that the candidate was wearing the same coat as Ennis Del Mar, Heath Ledger's character, in the movie Brokeback Mountain while someone in the blogosphere did. That movie, as I'm sure most of you remember, was about a gay relationship carried on by two men over a long period of time.

A Snowy Friday Hodge Podge: $300 Million Surplus; Super Bowl Headaches; Sister Won't Back Newt

$300 Million…REALLY?
News came this week that the state had $300 million more than it
thought it had. Just in time for a reelection year! Coincidence?

Regardless, I have been discussing with some of my friends some of the
things that the state could do with that money that’s better than just
returning it to taxpayers. The two that keep coming to the top
include more money for public schools and more money for the victims
of the Indiana State Fair stage collapse. Those two make a heck of a
lot more sense than just sending a rebate check to Hoosiers.

Super Bowl Headaches
JMV, 1070 The Fan’s afternoon drive time host, was wondering what
Indy is going to be like during the Super Bowl for the working folks and people that live downtown that have to move around during the two weeks of hype and
pageantry that is the big game. No question, it’s going to be a
challenge.

It’s also a headache in other ways, too. A friend of mine informed me
that a group he’s involved with had booked a charter bus during Super
Bowl week to attend a long distance function. The bus company just
informed them that the reservation will be canceled now due to demand
for charter buses in the city.

Besides all of this, the city is essentially turning into one big
billboard for the NFL with several downtown buildings going undercover
as advertising space. Also, there will be a number of the normal
parking lots that are being rented out to the NFL as well for space.
Bottom line, if you don’t have a ticket to the game and you don’t want
to be a part of the festivities, you’re going to have headaches,
anyway.

Newt Won’t Have Sister’s Support in 2012
If Republican Newt Gingrich wins the nomination and is the GOP’s
standard-bearer in the run for the White House, his own half-sister
will be supporting his opponent, President Barack Obama.

Candace Gingrich-Jones is a LGBT rights activist that first made
headlines when Gingrich was still Speaker of the House, Newt Gingrich.

Gingrich-Jones told Reuters that she would be supporting
President Barack Obama in 2012 even if her half-brother wins the
Republican nomination.

Gingrich-Jones said that her brother did not even attend her wedding.

Take the Compromise

Democrats appear to be digging in for a fight over the expanded smoking ban in Marion County eschewing the compromise reached a few days ago in favor of what might be a stricter ban that has exactly zero chance of becoming a city ordinance.

The Indianapolis Star reports that Councillor Joanne Sanders, the outgoing Minority Leader of the Council, doesn't think many Democrats are on board with Council President Ryan Vaughn's compromise that essentially carved out exceptions for existing hookah bars, tobacco shops, cigar bars, and private clubs or fraternal organization that vote to allow smoking. Vaughn allegedly drafted his proposal according to what Mayor Greg Ballard would sign.

If the Dems don't compromise with Vaughn, gridlock will probably ensue, and we will not get anything as citizens. Ballard will not sign a tougher ban, and the Democrats don't have a veto-proof majority on the Council. No ban? That means there will still be more smoke than there needs to be in Marion County.

While the compromise is not what most Democrats want, it's a start and a move in the right direction. I think that the Dems on the Council should reconsider their positions on this compromise.

An Open Letter to "Christian" Rick Perry

After watching the most narrow-minded and homophobic political ad I've ever seen, I decided to write an open letter to the candidate that approved it, Rick Perry.

Dear Rick Perry,
Your ad makes me ill. It makes me sad. It makes me scared for the future of our country. If a person with views like yours can be taken seriously as a Presidential candidate...even for five minutes...then I really weep for your wing of the Republican Party.

I am not the most religious person in the world, but I think I understand what true Christianity is, and it's not what you think it is.

True Christianity has nothing to do with your made up "War on Christmas" or the fact that students (and teachers) actually do openly pray in public schools every day, but it has everything to do with your skewed view of religion, faith, and sexuality.

Faith is not religion. Sexuality has nothing to do with either. The fact that gays and lesbians can openly serve in our military is not a liberal attack or an attack from President Obama on anything. It's a sign that our country is moving in the right direction.

I'm not ashamed to admit I'm a Christian too, and I don't ever need to be in the pew on Sunday to know that something is wrong in this country when someone calling themselves a Christian attacks a group of people who have done nothing but wish to serve their country openly.

So, Mr. Perry, I ask that you immediately erase all trace that this ad ever existed, and I ask that you apologize to the gay men and women serving this country proudly in uniform that keep your right to call yourself a Christian despite your narrow and homophobic views safe.

While you're at it, immediately suspend your campaign. Your views will only do more harm to our military and to LGBT Americans.

Pearl Harbor Attacked 70 Years Ago Today

70 years ago today, the war came to us.

The United States territory of Hawaii was attacked by the Empire of Japan at the Pearl Harbor Naval Base, and, by the end of the next day, we were fully involved in World War II.

Of course, over the years, there have been conspiracy theories and controversies. Old wounds have scarred over and the United States now finds itself in a close ally relationship with Japan. Even some of the combatants of that horrible day have become friends.

Today, we rightly honor the 2,390 Americans that died that day at Pearl Harbor. We also honor the countless sailors and soldiers that survived that day and fought bravely for the next few years in a true global conflict. Some made it home, and some did not.

Today should also shine a light on a generation that we are losing at a too rapid pace. World War II veterans are aging and passing on. It's estimated that out of the 16,112,566 members of the armed forces during World War II that only 2,079,000 are still living, and we are losing an estimated 850 PER DAY, according to the Department of Veteran Affairs. You would figure as these vets age that number will go up. Within six or seven years, we could be seeing a good number of these veterans gone forever.

That's why it's important to honor them while they are here. Thanks to all the World War II vets and all the veterans out there in the world today. We honor your service and sacrifice.

Of course today, we remember Pearl Harbor and those that sacrificed so much that day. We also hope for a world full of peace and love this holiday season.

Romney Scrubbed State Records

The Atlantic Wire reported yesterday that when he was Governor of Massachusetts, Mitt Romney worked hard to erase state records accumulated that might illuminate and provide insight to his time as the Chief Executive of Massachusetts.

Among other charges, Atlantic Wire writer Dashiell Bennett says that members of his staff purchased state hard drives with their own money so they could take them home. Scores of e-mails were deleted from the state's database and forced the state to spend $97,000 of taxpayer dollars to break an office equipment lease so new computers could be installed.

Bennett says Romney didn't break any rules, but it's clear that he definitely has had something to hide. In this time where government should be becoming more transparent, it appears that Romney is no fan of transparency. The article also points out that these records are critical because Romney has no other public office experience except for the time he spent as Governor.

It's no wonder why. Romney thinks no one pays attention to things he has said, but he makes John Kerry's flip flops of 2004 look like a model of stoic consistency.

Thing is, this is a major problem should Romney win the nomination. Obama is putting the ball on the tee to attack this one. More presently, it's a major problem as Romney fights for his political life against the likes of Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul who appear to be the latest two Republican geese to lead the "We aren't Mitt" flock. It just gives Republicans one more reason not to like the former Governor.

Davis Announces 7th District Bid; Ajabu Attempting Independent Run

Well, I wish I would have posted it here, but, when I heard Steve Davis was stepping aside as Southport Police Chief, I knew it would probably be to run for Congress in the 7th District.

The former Republican nominee for Marion County Sheriff announced last week that he was stepping aside to run for another political office. At the time, I posted it on my Facebook that I wondered if he would give Congress a go, and it looks like he is, according to Friday’s Indianapolis Star.

Davis ran unsuccessfully for Sheriff in 2006 and lost the Republican nomination to Dennis Fishburn in 2010. Since that time, he’s been a frequent guest on controversial talk show host Stan Solomon’s internet program. Solomon, of course, had to step aside as Marvin Scott’s campaign manager in the 7th District race in 2010 after his many controversial tweets. A simple Google search reveals quite a few appearances by Steve Davis on the program talking on a number of subjects.

Other names being bandied about out there in rumor land include former candidates Carlos May and Marvin Scott (just because he never knows when to quit). Another intriguing rumor is that City-County Councillor Jeff Cardwell is considering a run.

The 7th District might be more competitive than in the past given André Carson’s controversial statements this past spring and the redistricting that moved the district south to include all of Decatur, Franklin, and Perry Townships and less of Pike, Washington and Lawrence Townships.

Also in the race is controversial figure Mmoja Ajabu. Rev. Ajabu wants to get on the ballot as an independent. He surfaced online in a video talking with the founder of a group that has been described as a "white advocacy" organization known as the Hoosier Nation. Some on YouTube describe the group in another way, and, it's hard not to agree with that opinion when looking at the organization's website. Here's the video.

The seat still figures to be safe, but the right Republican might be able to make a dent. As we’ve seen, the Republican voters don’t know exactly how to get behind the right candidate in the 7th. Carson is still the heavy favorite, and he should be. His controversial statements (which I criticized him for here) are a small blemish on a pretty solid record in Congress thus far.

Two of Mayor's Charter Schools in News for Wrong Reasons

I have always stated that charter schools should not be considered public schools, and that they should have a separate and distinct category. Two stories in the news this past week would seem to buttress my argument.

Most recently, the Fall Creek Academy has decided to cut ties with Mayor Greg Ballard’s Office. According to the Indianapolis Star, the GEO Foundation that manages Fall Creek Academy has been dissatisfied with Ballard’s decision to shutter Fountain Square Academy, another school it manages. Thus, they are looking to Ball State to grant a charter for a new Fountain Square school as well as pick up the charter on the Fall Creek Academy. If Ball State fails to pick up the charter, Fall Creek Academy might close as well.

Also last week, we learned that the Stonegate Early College High School would be shuttering because it ran out of money. This put 180 students’ education into limbo for next semester. Traditional public schools close, too. Of course some local districts have made the decision to close schools within their districts, but it should be against the law for any school to close mid-year. That, as a friend of mine says, “Just don’t make no sense.”

Can you imagine Franklin Central High School, mid-year, with less than one month's notice saying, “We’re out of money, so we quit.” NO! People would be outraged and rightly so. On top of this, this is yet another charter issued by the Mayor's Office. You'd think he'd be watching what's going on over there.

Regardless, Mayor Ballard wants to create more charter schools in his name in the city. That’s fine, but these two examples show a dissatisfaction with the Mayor’s Office in how he’s administrating his charter schools, and, in another case, how enrollment may just not be out there for charter schools right now (as well as funding). The money is only finite, and we’ve seen that the Republicans in the Indiana House aren’t going to open the purse strings much to match education.

That doesn't even begin to address this charge by Indianapolis Public Schools reported over at the Hoosier Ed Blog that charters are simply sending students that they can't handle back to IPS.

Charter schools should be considered charter schools. They are different animals than traditional public schools, and we shouldn’t keep blurring the lines.

Yesterday on this blog, I wondered out loud if the fight over redistricting would kill a spirit of bipartisanship that Democrats said they were wishing to usher in with this next City-County Council term.

The Indianapolis Star weighed in today and urged the GOP and Mayor Greg Ballard to stop the rush to redistrict and instead do something more bipartisan. It remains to be seen if this will happen or not.

Today, however, there were some encouraging signs of a more palatable bipartisan agreement on the smoking ban. Put forth by Council President Ryan Vaughn, it's not a comprehensive ban, but the Star reports that a workable compromise has been reached. One of the co-sponsors of a potential more comprehensive smoking ban proposal, Angela Mansfield, told the Star she will support the compromise.

The new version of the proposal would, according to the Star, ban smoking in all public places in Marion County grandfathering in hookah and cigar bars (provided they were in operation by January 1 and other places such as private clubs, fraternal organizations or veterans halls if their membership voted to allow smoking by majority vote).

So, perhaps the reports of bipartisanship's death are greatly exaggerated. Then again, this is something that, post election, both parties wanted.

We'll see in the next few days how this progresses from here and ultimately how the Council will vote. Will Republicans follow their President? Will Democrats cross over? I've said it before, and I'll say it again. It's an incredibly interesting time to be a politics watcher in Indianapolis.

They should have just called the kids at Decatur Central High School. This is a wonderful, fun, and happy video that portrays our city as a diverse, fun, wonderful place.

Is Bipartisanship Dead Before CCC Reconvenes?

According to some “in-the-know”, the GOP-fueled redistricting plan now being proposed by City-County Council President Ryan Vaughn and constructed by GOP operative David Brooks is a clear slap at bi-partisanship. As presumptive Council President Maggie Lewis said in one of her first public statements after being nominated by the Democratic caucus that she would reach across the aisle and talk to the Mayor about finding common ground, the Mayor’s king makers were apparently preparing to announce a plan to bypass Dems altogether.

I know that because I heard it from a high-ranking Republican at a public meeting on Monday night. Former City-County Council President Bob Cockrum said at the Decatur Township Civic Council meeting that the GOP plan this time around was introduced now while the Republicans held both the legislative and executive branches of city government to avoid potential legal issues and problems that might come up if Democrats tried to put forth their own plan in 2012. In essence, let’s get it done quick to avoid any dissent.

In the process, the Marion County Democratic Party claims that the Republicans ran over a whole slew of barricades and roadblocks that assure that districts aren’t simply drawn willy nilly or for purely political purposes. The Dems say there was no oversight of the process, and there could not have been much.

This is not the kind of start you might have thought might come from a party that was just rejected by City-County Council voters. It’s certainly not the action of a Mayor that has won his office by little more than the electoral equivalent of a whisker, twice.

If this is going to be the tone and tenor of the next four years, the City-County Council’s relationship with the Mayor will make Congress’ squabbles with the President all too local.

Litebox Still Thorn in Side of Ballard, Daniels

I guess you should know who you call a visionary.

This weekend, the Indianapolis Star published the results of a continued investigation into Litebox, a company claiming to be bringing 1,100 new jobs to Indianapolis.

As you may remember, the deal was announced at what seems to have been a hastily-called news conference just a couple of weeks before the General Election. Mayor Greg Ballard and Governor Mitch Daniels stood beside Litebox CEO Bob Yanagihara and heaped nothing but praise on the man. The Star's report tells quite a different story. It's worth the read.

The city trotted out a "new board chairman and spokesperson" of Yanagihara's company to be interviewed by the press, but that interview seemed to just create more questions. The Star's report on that wild interview is here.

Granted, the city has very little to lose in this deal. They didn't promise Yanagihara anything in return if nothing gets built, but the hastily-called news conference and the heaping praise laid on the company's founder seem little more than a reelection ploy now. It also underscores how desperate this Mayor was to get positive job news in the media prior to doing his due diligence.

Questioned about these things before, Ballard always falls back on the, "This is how it's always been done," excuse. Well, if this is the paradigm he inherited, then it's time for a change. I also get the feeling that Mitch Daniels' face just keeps getting redder and redder over this clear embarrassment.

Cockrum Reveals Details on Redistricting

More details about the redistricting controversy were aired in a public meeting tonight from former City-County Council President Bob Cockrum.

The new Council districts, according to Councillor Cockrum, will not be in effect until 2016 when Councillors elected in 2015 are sworn in.

The map is much different. Gone is the logical numbering from northwest to southeast. Some districts are out of numerical order. I still can't reasonably determine what is in or out of some of the districts because the maps provided lack many identifying roads and streets. Attorney and GOP operative David Brooks' work also includes 600 new Marion County precincts from the old 590.

Cockrum also commented publicly about the 2000 fight on redistricting for the Council. He says that when those districts were drawn, there was a split council. Democrat Bart Peterson was in control of the Mayor's Office and Republicans controlled the Council. The Republicans crafted a plan. The Democrats crafted a plan, and neither plan was accepted by the Mayor and Council. The plans went to the courts where the Marion Superior Court Judges ended in a tie. The plan then went to the Indiana Supreme Court which ultimately drew the districts.

Cockrum said that the Council picked up the tab for both sides of the fight costing taxpayers a hefty sum. He said the current plan was brought forth now to avoid a messy conflict resulting in legal fees.

I'll let you decide if you believe that or not. After all, Cockrum said it cost a quarter of a million in legal fees then. Well, it cost taxpayers almost that much to secure David Brooks' services this time around. Did I mention that his wife is on the ballot in 2012?

INDIANAPOLIS -November 28, 2011- Today, the leadership of the newly-elected Democratic majority of the 2012 Indianapolis-Marion County Council called on Council Republicans to abandon their ill-conceived attempts to establish new Council district boundaries before the end of the year. Incoming Democratic Council leaders also called on Mayor Greg Ballard to rescind his recent order establishing new Indianapolis election precincts so that the bi-partisan Indiana Election Commission staff can review those precincts for compliance with state law.

Democratic Councillors Maggie L. Lewis (District 7), Brian Mahern (District 16) and Vern Brown (District 18) demanded the immediate withdrawal of the Republican redistricting proposal filed November 23, 2011. Councillors Lewis, Mahern and Brown cited the lack of bi-partisan technical review of Mayor Ballard’s newly ordered precincts on which that Republican redistricting proposal is based, as well as a complete lack of opportunity for the Council Democratic caucus to participate in redistricting efforts.

“Three weeks ago the voters soundly rejected the current Council’s Republican majority. The lame duck Republican majority’s last minute attempt to ram through an eleventh hour redistricting proposal must stop immediately,” said Councillor Mahern, who the newly-elected Democratic Councillors selected as their nominee for Council Vice President next year.

The Council’s Democratic caucus has not proposed new Council district boundary maps due to:
New precincts for use in 2012 were ordered by Mayor Ballard with less than two hours before the deadline to introduce Council proposals for approval by the end of 2011
Mayor Ballard’s ordered precincts for use in 2012 have not been independently reviewed for compliance with state law by the bi-partisan Election Division of the Indiana Election Commission
The Council’s Republican majority provided itself financial resources to draft its proposed new Council district boundaries. No such resources were provided to the Council's Democratic caucus
Indiana state law requires that new Council district boundaries must be established next year, two years following the 2010 census

"Without the 2012 precinct boundaries soundly established, we believe it would be wasteful and foolhardy to try to establish new Council district boundary maps in the short remainder of this year, only to have to repeat the process all over again next year as required by state law," said Councillor Mahern.

The Council Republicans’ last minute push to establish new Council district boundaries with precincts that lack bi-partisan review risks poisoning the well of cooperation next year.

"Proceeding at this point to attempt to establish new Council district boundaries with not yet reviewed precincts before the end of this year would serve only to declare open war on the possibility of bi-partisanship next year between Mayor Ballard and the incoming Democratic-controlled Council," Councillor Mahern said.

Incoming Democratic Council leaders also called on Mayor Ballard to immediately rescind his November 22, 2011, precinct order. Mayor Ballard’s November 22 order prevents the Election Division of the Indiana State Election Commission from conducting a technical review of those precincts.

The Mayor has the responsibility for periodically establishing precinct boundaries, which are the basic geographic area for elections and the building blocks for constructing district boundaries for elective offices.

The Election Division provides technical reviews for proposed precincts across the state.

Mayor Ballard’s November 22 precinct order is the first time an Indianapolis Mayor has ordered precincts without the benefit of the technical review by the bi-partisan state election agency.

"Prudence and fairness requires an independent bi-partisan technical review of 2012 precincts for state law compliance, particularly before anyone proposes new Council district boundaries based on those new precincts," said Councillor Mahern.

In an email sent November 23, 2011, shortly after receiving Mayor Ballard’s precinct order, the Indiana Election Commission’s Election Division warned the Mayor against ordering those precincts without such a technical review completed.

“Each county that I have worked with has needed some form of assistance or review. I would expect the largest county [Marion] to be the same,” wrote Michelle Misiukiewicz Brzycki of the Election Division. “I have yet to receive a county submission that did not go through various changes during this review stage. It is my strong recommendation that Mayor Ballard rescind that order to allow for [our] review and comment.”

Yet, with apparent foreknowledge of the Mayor’s order finalizing the election boundaries without a bi-partisan technical review, the Council's Republican Caucus proposed new Council maps based on those precincts only a few hours after the Mayor ordered those precincts adopted and minutes before the deadline for Council proposals that can be approved before the end of the year.

"It is disappointing to learn that while we were extending the olive branch of bi-partisan cooperation by requesting a meeting with the Mayor to discuss how we could work together to move the city forward next year, the Mayor was colluding with the Council’s Republican caucus in this power grab to thwart the Democratic caucus from proposing any new Council boundary maps," said Councillor Mahern.

The newly elected Democratic Councillors have selected Councillor Maggie A. Lewis as their nominee for Council President next year. They have also selected Councillor Vern Brown as Majority Leader for next year.

Lame Duck Council Hands Out Cash for Redistricting; Could Have Been Done for Free

The lame duck's quacking, but the only person smiling is David Brooks.

Last week, just before everybody went to eat turkey, City-County Council President Ryan Vaughn unveiled the proposed new City-County Council districts with little fanfare. The districts were drawn by Brooks, who was also given the task of cleaning up precinct lines with the new Congressional District lines (something the Mayor's Office should do). Brooks, a key Republican insider, was given a no-bid $225,000 contract in the budget passed by the Council in October to do the job even though the state of Indiana has the software to do the job...for free.

Regardless, there is no hurry to redraw the districts, even though Vaughn says there is. The only hurry is so that Vaughn can get them through prior to the Democrats taking control of the Council in January.

That means that we will have spent $225,000 to do something we could have done for free that could all be undone by a proposal of the Democratically-led Council in 2012. Way to look out for the taxpayer, GOP.

While Brooks is counting his cash, city workers are hitting the cheese line because Mayor Greg Ballard valued Brooks doing his job over the jobs of city workers.

According to Abdul, the Council plans to hold four quickly-called public hearings on the new district before bringing them up for a vote. I can't attend any of them because of the times they are scheduled:

GOP Wishes Unhappy Thanksgiving to Working Class Hoosiers

Unions…it’s your turn. As working Hoosiers get ready to celebrate Thanksgiving, they have reason to wonder how big the turkey will be next year.

After teachers “got it” last General Assembly session in the form of revenge disguised as reform from the top down, the Republicans announced Monday that Right to Work (for less) is at the top of their legislative agenda for 2012.

Make no mistake, unions will yell and fight and scream and protest, but Republicans will do everything they can do to pass the bill that would bust unions and union membership. Since they have the seats and the votes, they can likely do it unless the screams and yells and the protest from Democrats can somehow sway them.

It’s become one of the most contentious times in recent Indiana political history. Expect it only to get worse in this short session as the world watches with Indianapolis in the bright shiny lights of the Super Bowl.

Now the fight for the working person’s soul is on here in Indiana. Unions are strong because of their solidarity. “Right to Work” punches a hole right through that solidarity.

Supporters will tell you that “right to work” is a step forward for Indiana and that it frees up employers to hire new employees. I can’t see how it will create one job. Employers aren’t hiring, and it’s not because of unions. Unions protect wages and worker’s rights. All this most recent attempt at “Right to Work” legislation will do is have workers with less representation and fewer dollars in their pockets and will cause more people to become “working poor” instead of “middle class.”

Some of Mike Pence's fans have been calling me out on Twitter, and calling into question my analysis of the Republican race for Governor. I believe my analysis shows "shocking ignorance" according to one Pence fan and that, I should "stick to Democrats" and "do some research." Ok...just remember...the truth hurts.

Websites like Govtrack (at www.govtrack.us) make doing research very easy. A quick search of Mike Pence's Congressional record shows you the following.

In an analysis of his votes, he is rated as a "Far Right Republican Leader". What does that mean? Pence has co-sponsored a lot of bills. It also means that he's co-sponsored a lot of far right Republican bills. Mike Pence is no centrist. He's far right.

Further, in an analysis of bills he has sponsored, Mike Pence has gotten none of them enacted in Congress. These aren't co-sponsorships where someone can throw their name on them...these are his bills. He's 0 for 63. Pence fans will make all sorts of excuses...but there's not anything there for Pence. Furthermore, if you really want to check his position on issues, go to his Project Vote Smart page.

These ratings say that Mike Pence has spent his time in Congress carrying water for the Republican Party. That's my analysis. I don't claim to be an expert, but I do know some...and I think they agree. In short, any objective analysis will tell you that Mike Pence makes Mitch Daniels look like John Kerry...especially on social issues.

Now, as far as the GOP race goes, Pence is, without question, the frontrunner. Wallace is still a longshot, but he can inflict a lot of damage on Pence by pointing out all of these deficiencies in Pence's record if he wishes to go there. Wallace can define Pence before John Gregg ever has to, and Wallace must do that while introducing himself. People know Mike Pence, but they really don't KNOW Mike Pence. The perception is not the reality and this provides opportunity for Wallace.

I hope that clears up my position for you.

Expect Indiana's Governor's Race to Be Watched Nationally

The race for the Governor's Mansion has barely begun in Indiana, and there are already signs that it's going to be one to watch for people across the country.

First of all, you have the intrigue of the Republican Primary. Mike Pence is no doubt the frontrunner, but Jim Wallace could pull an upset. Pence is obviously concerned. The Indianapolis Star reported that his campaign is accepting donations from all across the country. Wallace will have to up his pace to keep up. Pence promised not to speak out on any issues until May, but he's already stuck his foot in his mouth a couple of times on taxes. He's appealing to the Tea Party base. Wallace has a different message. Pence is a lightweight with a very disappointing Congressional record. He can easily be portrayed as an outsider, and I wonder if Wallace will try to do it.

On the Democratic side, John Gregg is the big fish. He needs to continue to go about his business and raise his name recognition after having spent the last few years in Southwest Indiana with his boys. Gregg obviously is connected bringing in a big name like Bill Clinton to help him raise some money. The Star also reports that Gregg has received some donations from organized labor. We'll find out where he stands in January, campaign cash-wise.

Then, of course, there's Rupert. Reality TV star Rupert Boneham, even though he won't bring, in all likelihood enough votes to win the race, he will bring a lot of interest to the race. We've already seen this race get national tv coverage when it was announced that he was seeking the nomination.

Pence's national star will draw attention, and Rupert's national profile also will draw attention. It's up to Wallace and Gregg to turn the attention on themselves do what should be quite easy: define Mike Pence as a Washington-insider and an ambitious politician looking for the next stepping stone to the Presidency. I believe Mike Pence wants to be Governor only to be President.

The country will be watching this highly interesting race develop.

Dem Caucus Tabs Lewis to Lead Council

The Democratic caucus has selected Maggie Lewis as their nominee to be City-County Council President. If elected by the Council, Lewis will be the first female City-County Council President.

I have known Councillor Lewis for a few years now, and I know that she will be a tremendous Council President. Democrats have made a very wise choice.

Beginning on January 1, 2012, Democrats will control the Council 16 – 13. When elected by the Council as a whole, Councillor Lewis will be the first female Council President in Indianapolis history.

Lewis said, “I am honored to be selected by my fellow Democratic Councillors to serve as President. I have already reached out to Mayor Ballard to discuss how we can best work together to move our city forward.”

In addition, the Democratic caucus filled out the rest of the leadership team by selecting Councillor Brian Mahern (District 16) as their nominee for Vice President and Councillor Vernon Brown (District 18) as Majority Leader.

Ballard Less Than Truthful About Layoffs...Furloughs 27 Civilian IMPD Employees

Times are tough when it comes to the budget in Indianapolis. We all know that. That's why many people chuckled when Mayor Ballard said he had yet again honestly balanced the Indianapolis budget. Just last month, he promised no layoffs with his balanced budget. Turns out...it was probably a lie. Just a week and two days after the election, Mayor Ballard has announced the layoff of 27 IMPD civilian employees. Well, he just didn't fund their jobs in the budget. I guess that was buried in the details.

Public safety is job one? Hard to believe for the Mayor that has found millions of dollars for road and street improvements and professional sports teams, but he cannot fund the jobs of 27 civilian employees of the city's police department notifying them just before the holiday season. Remember, Ballard campaigned against Melina Kennedy by citing proposed police layoffs that never happened while she was deputy mayor.

According to the Indianapolis Star, Ballard said that 200 city employees would lose their jobs by attrition. This doesn't sound like attrition to me. Sounds like a big fat whopper from a man that waited a week after he was reelected to announce something he could have brought forth before the election.

I feel sorry for the 27 people that have lost their jobs, and I'm sorry your Mayor wasn't more honest with you before now. Now, these individuals will be forced to endure a holiday season knowing that their jobs are done at the start of the year.

Can We Clear the Air?

In Marion County, more people died from 2000-2010 from lung cancer than any form of cancer. The thing is; we can do something to prevent it.

The lame duck President, Ryan Vaughn, has proposed a smoking ban that would stop huffing and puffing in most places in Marion County with some exceptions for cigar bars, hookah bars, bowling alleys, hotel rooms, veterans and private clubs. He says he wants to pass it now to get it in place for the Super Bowl, but Democrats aren't so sure.

Let's take a look at this a little deeper. Council Minority Leader Joanne Sanders told WTHR that she wondered exactly why the President felt this was something that needed to come before the Council now in this lame duck term. She's right.

The City-County Council has exactly the same makeup as it has since Ed Coleman left the Republican Party and became a Libertarian. Now that the pressure of the election lights are off, Vaughn is trying to slip this through the Council before his party's time of leadership comes to a close.

WTHR reports that Republican Benjamin Hunter and Democrat Angela Mansfield, along with Smoke Free Indy, will unveil their own tougher proposal at a news conference on today. That means that the City-County Council will have dueling proposals.

Let's just hope we take a step towards modern society and much of the rest of the United States and get this city's air more clean.

Burning Questions for 2012

As the ink dries on the 2011 Election Season, it's never too early to look ahead to the next cycle for us politicos. There’s a lot on the docket. Here are five hot questions I think we’ll be following on this blog and elsewhere for the upcoming election season.

How strong is Richard Mourdock’s support?
We simply don’t know yet. The 2012 Primary Election will be here before we know it, and it seems hard to believe that any Republican, let alone a guy like Richard Mourdock can beat Richard Lugar. If Mourdock continues to stir the pot and whip up Tea Party support into a frenzy, then you can expect this race to get very interesting. A WISH-TV/Franklin College poll says Lugar is under 50 percent support, and that really has to make him concerned.

I think the Presidential Primary may play into this one as well. If the fight for the Republican nomination is still on, then I think you’ll see this race get even more intriguing.

What will redistricting mean?
I think we’re already seeing some of this. When John Barnes and Mary Ann Sullivan announced they were running for Indiana Senate seats and not Indiana House seats, then I think that tells you things don’t look great for Democrats in the Indiana House…or even the Indiana General Assembly. Yep. It’s not going to be pretty in this Mitch Daniels lame duck/race for the Vice Presidency session of the Indiana General Assembly. If you’re a Democrat, close your eyes tight, grit your teeth, and be glad it’s a short session.

For Congress, I think things have gotten a bit more interesting. I don’t care what the Marion County Democratic Party’s analysis of the 7th Congressional District said, losing much of the Northside and gaining all of the Southside spells a tougher race for André Carson. It makes this race much more competitive, and Carson’s controversial statements on race relations didn’t help him, either.

I’m also interested in the races in the 2nd, 5th, 6th, and 8th Congressional Districts. Should be interesting to see how these free-for-alls shake out. Who will survive the “itchy and scratchy” battle between Andrew Straw and Brendan Mullen in the 2nd? Can Burton survive in the 5th? Who will emerge to replace Mike Pence in CD6, and will the 8th return to “Bloody 8th” status again this year?

How do you handicap the Gubernatorial Grind?
The race for Governor in 2012 is already shaping up to be a very interesting battle. John Gregg almost has clear sailing to the nomination for the Democrats, but things could get very thorny on the Republican side.

Jim Wallace has money and Mike Pence has money and name recognition, but something tells me that Pence is kind of like Mitt Romney. Republicans will support him if he is their nominee, but they would rather support someone else. That man just might be Jim Wallace.

When it gets to a General Election race, can John Gregg make a dent? Yes, I think he can. Of course, then you have the bearded-one, Rupert Boneham in this thing, too. He’s a bona fide celebrity.

Can Barack Obama reclaim Indiana?
Not if the election were held today, but it is still a year away, and a lot can happen between now and then.

Obama has job approval ratings running in the 30’s here in the state, but that doesn’t mean that the economy can’t improve or that the Republicans won’t nominate someone wholly unqualified to be President.

I would say that it’s unlikely the President wins Indiana next year, but I would have told you the same thing at this point in 2007, too.

What will happen within the Marion County Democratic Party?
Ed Treacy is a strong party chairman. He’s done it in two counties. In 2008, he was brought back after the dismal 2007 elections and the death of Congresswoman Julia Carson to return the party to power.

If not for 7,000 votes in the Mayoral race, he would have been successful in completing the task. Marion County Democrats are now in every office in the City-County Building except the Mayor’s Office, and I’m sure that’s a big disappointment for Chairman Treacy.

His future will certainly be something many will continue to talk about. He’s earned the right by his past performance to determine his own fate, and I hope he will be allowed to do so. I don’t sense a coup in the works, but I still think people are trying to let what happened on Election Day sink in.

I know people either love or hate Ed Treacy, but he’s a heck of a Party Chair. The Democrats can do a lot worse.

Well, that’s enough for now. There’s plenty to think about for 2012.
