Sandlin Tosses Hat in Ring for Senate District 36 Race

Councillor Jack Sandlin
With Brent Waltz deciding to run for the 9th District Congressional seat, a member of the City-County Council is throwing his hat in the ring.

Last week, Jack Sandlin, who is running unopposed for reelection to the City-County Council, announced that he would like to replace Brent Waltz in the State Senate come 2017.

Sandlin represents District 24 on the Southside of Indy on the Council and is one of the furthest right voices on the Council.  When the City-County Council voted to oppose RFRA and urge the addition of LGBT Hoosiers to the state's non-discrimination law, Sandlin was one of four Councillors to vote against the proposal.

Sandlin has never faced serious Democratic opposition in his Council runs having defeated Libertarian Ed Coleman in 2011.  Neither the Democrats or the Libertarians ran anyone against him in 2015.  That doesn't make a whole lot of sense because Sandlin, a two-term Perry Township Trustee, lost in his own party's primary in 2006 for a third term to Gary Coons.

Perry Township resident Ryan Guillory, a Democrat, has announced he will run for the the seat in 2016.  Guillory has run for Indiana House before in a very tough seat (District 93 vs. Dave Frizzell), and he is a very good candidate.

Sandlin certainly will have to work harder than he's ever worked if he is the only candidate in that district because Guillory is tireless.  However, I would expect he will see competition for the GOP nomination.

I have been told Ryan Guillory is no longer a candidate.  I regret the error.

Just a heads up: Guillory has opted not to run because he just recently became a partner at a law firm and doesn't have the time. Agreed he would've been a great candidate!
