President Obama Announces Osama bin Laden Killed by United States Operations

President Barack Obama announced tonight that he authorized a operation to kill Osama bin Laden based on intelligence that his administration has been gathering since the start of his Presidency. The operation against a compound in Pakistan was successful, and no Americans were harmed. Osama bin Laden is now dead at the age of 54.

With this, there is now some measure of closure for the families and the victims of 9/11. There is also some measure of closure for the entire country on this story, but I think the story still continues. The need for vigilance is now even more heightened.

Congratulations to all of those in the intelligence community as well as all of our troops around the world that continue to fight for our freedom. As people celebrate this news, let's also remember those troops and those civilians that have died in the War on Terror. That war continues this evening.

Some republicans are saying that the President acted contrary to the wishes of his political base. This is an effort to perpetuate the myth that all Democrats are weak on defense. If necessary, we should remind our friends that many of us on the left, who've supported the President, have always argued for going after the man who attacked us on 9/11 and against the distraction in Iraq.
