Sarita Liggett, 1943-2009

Late Friday, word came that my friend Sarita Liggett had been found dead in her home by friend and Perry Township Ward Chair Mary Ann Seyfried. Immediately, my heart sunk. It just didn't seem right.

For those of you that don't know Sarita, she was an amazing person. She and I often talked about our passion for education. She was a great educator who continued to work as a substitute after retirement.

Sarita was also a good Democrat and a person who deeply cared about her community. In the week before her death, she worked at the early voting site in Beech Grove for the Wishard, Beech Grove, and Perry referenda. As a Vice Ward Chair, she also helped fill pollworker slots across Perry.

As former Marion County Democratic Party employee Nerrissa Phillips Murray put it on her Facebook page, "We lost a fearless woman, excellent educator, good Democrat and a gracious friend this weekend. Ms. Liggett I am sure gonna miss you."

I think many of us that knew Sarita feel the same way. So, here's to you Sarita Liggett. May you rest in peace.

Sarita Liggett's arrangements are as follows: Tuesday, November 10. Viewing from 12 to 2 pm with service following at Carmody-Ewing Funeral Home, 819 S Harrison St, Shelbyville, IN (317)392-2555.
